Random Stuff

I don't quite know what got into my head but I thought I'd post some of the pictures of my good but not stellar experiments. Most of these are stuff that I just made up along the way.

The first one is a whole wheat spaghetti with prawns, basil leaves, broccoli, chili flakes and lemon zest. I've made this a long time ago. I think it was one of those random 5 ingredient 15 minute things you come up with when you're starving. Adding garlic would have been a good idea but I was just famished I really didn't care. I probably even burnt the chili flakes and lemon zest.

The second exhibit would be another 15 minute item from my cupboard. It's shrimp with stir-fried in soy sauce, tomato sauce, butter, garlic and sambal blachan powder. I thought I was using paprika, but I guess I grabbed the wrong thing and I ended up with the sambal blachan powder instead. It sure was interesting, it wasn't bad actually. We had to wash it down with a $10 good old reliable red, cheapo but good-o for that price range. Can't complain.

Exhibit 3 would be my failed attempt of replicating my mother in-law's roast beef. Personally, I am not fond of roast beef that is just too soft you can mistake it for a stew. I like mine a little on the red/pink side still but everybody knows that mommy's roast beef is the best roast beef in the world and so does my husband. Seriously though, my mother in-law's roast beef and gravy is actually very good. She seasons it with nothing but salt and pepper, her secret is a good A-grade Alberta beef. I forgot what the cut is, but whatever it is, she makes fantastic roast beef. Well, I used a cheap cut from the Great Canadian Superstore, it turned out well, it was juicy, it even managed to retain some of the pinkness, sadly it didn't turn out as good as my mother in-law's.

The fourth picture would be a cupboard raide. It's my rice and beans with pan-fried chili prawns and steamed broccoli. The prawns would be the best part of the meal. The rice was seasoned with oregano and cumin. It turned out kind of mushy because of the black beans and other veggies. If I make this again, I'll probably add the beans later and not at the same time as the rice. The prawns were seasoned with a mixture of ancho, paprika, chipotle and cayenne powder and a little bit of old bay seasoning plus some salt and pepper. I'll make the prawns again.

The last one would be my whole wheat spaghetti with prawns in tomato sauce. I just opened a tin of diced tomatoes, sauteed it in onion, garlic, chili flakes, dried oregano and added a pinch of Italian seasoning mix. I'm pretty sure I also added some balsamic vinegar and maybe a pinch of sugar. I was told by someone (I forgot who) that seafood and cheese do not go together but I guess when I made this I did not remember so I added some shaved parmesan. It was great for something under 20 minutes.
