Why do teeth stain?
Before we dive into specific foods, it's important to understand why some substances can cause staining. Tooth stains are usually due to the buildup of pigments that adhere to tooth enamel. Over time, these pigments can penetrate deeper into the tooth, making stains more difficult to remove.
The main foods that stain teeth
1. Coffee: Coffee is undoubtedly the most damaging to our enamel and darkens our teeth. Both coffee and tea (especially black tea) contain tannins, compounds that discolor and yellow teeth. In addition, as they are frequently consumed beverages, they can cause the accumulation of debris and create deeper stains.
2. Wine: Red wine is delicious, but its beautiful purple color and acidity are great enemies of the natural white of our teeth. The pigments in wine easily adhere to the enamel, causing visible stains. Don't forget that white wine also stains our teeth.
3. Dark sauces: Sauces such as soy sauce, barbecue or tomato sauce are delicious but rich in colorants and sugars. These sauces can leave dark residues on teeth if not rinsed properly.
4. Carbonated and energy drinks: Carbonated drinks, sodas, sugary soft drinks and energy drinks are not only detrimental to overall health because of their high sugar content that can cause tooth decay, but they can also contribute to tooth discoloration. Their high acid content and artificial coloring can cause significant staining.
5. Brightly colored fruits and vegetables: Although healthy, some fruits such as blackberries, pomegranates and some vegetables such as beets are rich in pigments that can stain teeth. Although they are nutritious, it is advisable to rinse the mouth after eating them.
6. Dark candies and sweets: Dark-colored candies, especially those containing artificial colors, are another enemy of tooth whiteness. They can leave persistent stains if consumed in excess.
