What to drink in the evening to lose weight? Our science-backed recommendations!

Eating habits have a direct influence on weight and health, and this includes the drinks consumed at the end of the day. Some beverages can be beneficial for weight loss, by promoting satiety, boosting metabolism or improving digestion. Conversely, others are rich in empty calories and can hinder weight control efforts. To choose the ideal drink before bedtime, it's essential to focus on nutritious options that are adapted to the body's needs ;-).

A drink before bed: good or bad idea?

Drinking before going to bed may seem harmless, but it can influence weight loss. Unlike solid foods, liquids are digested quickly and can contain a significant number of calories without providing a feeling of satiety. However, certain choices can help with weight management by providing essential nutrients. According to Chris Mohr, Ph.D., RD dietitian, certain beverages such as unsweetened plain kefir are particularly beneficial for metabolism and digestion.

Kefir, a recognized slimming ally

Kefir is a fermented drink rich in proteins, notably casein and whey, which help maintain muscle mass and prolong satiety. A study has shown that 1.5 oz/40 gr of casein before bedtime promotes better muscle recovery in athletes (Journal of Nutrition). In addition to its protein content, kefir contains probiotics, beneficial bacteria that support intestinal health and could have a positive influence on weight management (The Little Book of Game Changers, Jessica Cording, M.S., RD). Its potassium also helps regulate sodium balance, limiting water retention and reducing bloating.

Other alternatives for a slimming drink before bedtime

While kefir is an ideal option, other drinks can be consumed at the end of the day to promote weight loss. A smoothie made with fromage blanc and fruit is a protein-rich alternative with no added sugar. Warm milk, with its tryptophan content and relaxing minerals, can promote quality sleep, a key factor in regulating appetite and weight management (Sleep and Obesity, National Institutes of Health). Finally, sugar-free herbal teas, such as peppermint or chamomile, facilitate digestion and relaxation, optimizing nocturnal metabolism.
