Who hasn't left a plastic water bottle lying around for days on end, thinking it's safe to finish it later? Yet this is a habit to be avoided for a number of reasons, both for your health and for the quality of the water. Dr. Jimmy Mohamed explains why it's essential to throw away a plastic water bottle after 24 hours!

1. Oxidation: impact on taste and quality

As soon as the bottle is opened, the water is exposed to air and oxygen, triggering oxidation. Dr. Mohamed explains that this oxidation alters the taste of the water over time. In addition to a metallic or slightly bland taste, water can lose its mineral qualities. So, if your water is starting to taste strange, it's time to throw it out!

2. Bacterial contamination

Exposure to air not only alters taste, it also allows bacteria and other contaminants to thrive in water. These microorganisms, introduced by mouth contact in particular, proliferate in a moist environment like that of an open water bottle. That's why, to protect your health, we recommend that you do not consume a bottle of water that has been open for more than 24 hours!

3. Gas loss for soft drinks

For those who prefer soft drinks, loss of fizz is a well-known problem. Once the bottle is opened, the carbon dioxide starts to escape, making the drink flat in no time. Dr. Mohamed advises that soft drinks should be consumed quickly, as after 24 hours they may lose their effervescence and taste pleasure. There's nothing worse than a drink without bubbles, is there?

4. Food safety standards

Finally, for food safety reasons, it's always best not to prolong the use of plastic water bottles. Although these bottles are designed for single use, some people reuse them, increasing the risk of releasing microplastics or chemical compounds into the water, in addition to the bacteria that accumulate.

Alternatives for longer-lasting hydration

Rather than storing a plastic water bottle for days on end, consider using reusable stainless steel or glass bottles. Not only are they more environmentally friendly, they also preserve water quality and don't present the risks of oxidation or contamination of disposable plastic bottles.

In short, it's essential to dispose of your plastic water bottle once you've finished using it, to protect your health and guarantee quality hydration. Don't keep it for more than 24 hours after opening, and if you can, opt for more sustainable, environmentally-friendly alternatives;-)
