Curds and Whey

By The Rumbling Tummy (Visit website)

My least favorite nursery rhyme has always been "Little Miss Muffet." Hands down. It involves my two worst fears: curds and whey.

Surprised, are you? I know what you're thinking. "Gosh, I thought she was going to say spiders!" Well aren't I tricky? In all seriousness though, curds are bad enough, who would add whey? It's as if the writers were thinking - "Let's think of a dish regularly enjoyed by today's boys and girls. I know! Curds and whey, duh." These guys clearly have never had breakfast with anyone under the age of 12.

I held steadfast on my opinion that curds and whey is a disgusting food, the mere mention of it made my stomach turn. It wasn't until my early 20s that I found out my absolute favorite lunch time staple was my worst fear.

I got in the habit of buying fat-free cottage cheese at the grocery store after college. It was an easy lunch to pack for school and the mix-in possibilities are endless. I continue to regularly stock up on tubs of the Hood fat-free version. My husband is a salt fanatic, so he loves to pile it high on wheat thins and pita chips. I have a sweet tooth so I typically add blueberries, grapes or fresh pineapple. Though my ideal lunch is a big salad, sometimes I just don't have the time in the morning to put one together. Grabbing a container of this stuff or a greek yogurt are my quick options. Sometimes I even just bring in a container of Hood in the beginning of the week in case I forget to pack a lunch! Then I don't have to rely on the Hot Lunch program to fill my tummy (dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets, anyone? ugh.)

The health benefits of cottage cheese are pretty simple. It is pretty much low in everything "bad" - calories, fat and carbohydrates; high in everything "good" - calcium, Vitamin D and protein!

The moment I made the connection that curds and whey = cottage cheese, I stopped dead in my tracks. But after thinking it over, I decided I had to give up everything I stood for... at least in relation to nursery rhymes. Move over Miss Muffet, I'm going to be joining you on the tuffet (until that spider shows up, I'm telling you right now I will never change my view on those things. I'm not that progressive).
