It encompasses most of the area of the large, inhospitable Great Indian Desert (Thar Desert), which has an edge paralleling the Sutlej-Indus river valley along its border with Pakistan. The state borders Pakistan to the west, Gujarat to the southwest, Madhya Pradesh to the southeast, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to the northeast and Punjab to the north.The state capital is Jaipur. The people of Rajasthan are famously called the Marwaris. Rajasthan comes alive with exuberant folk dances, melodious music and spectacular festivities. Typically, men still wear twirling moustaches and women adorn themselves in multihued costumes. The men in Rajasthan wear special headgears called the pagri or the turban depending upon the climatic condition of the particular region.Rajasthani women wear ghagra choli's, saris, lehangas and dupattas. The women who belong to rich families wear special chappals that are decorated with sequins and gold threads. Rajasthan has a fair for every religious occasion, for every change of season and for every harvest. The people of Rajasthan work hard, are peaceful and law abiding and enjoy their culture, their music, festivals and fairs. One of the richest states in terms of handicrafts - the skilled hands of the craftsmen of Rajasthan creates some beautiful treasures. Stone, clay, leather, wood, ivory, lac, glass, brass, silver, gold and textiles are transformed into works of art. From the colorful bandhani prints to the ornate meenakari and kundan jewelry - Rajasthan is a study in colors. The food in Rajasthan is as diverse as the State itself. In some areas it is simple and basic while in others it is exotic and elaborate. As it normally happens, the cooking was influenced by the land and the lifestyle of its inhabitants and the availability of ingredients in this region. The cuisines of Rajasthan have a magnificent range of unique, colourful and spicy and sweet dishes. The dishes of Rajasthan have become so popular all over the country that many Rajasthan food festivals are arranged. The sweets of Rajasthan are equally good as the spicy delicacies. Sweets are an integral part of the Rajasthani food which are not merely used as desserts and are consumed before and even along with the meal. Besanchakki, Dilkhushaal, Churma, Balushahi, Motichoor ladoos, Ghevar are some of the popular sweets of Rajasthan. > The use of pure ghee, gram flour, lentil, Bajra, chilies, corn and mango powder is very common in most of the dishes which are cooked in Rajasthan. The best known Rajasthani food is the combination of dal, bati and churma but for the adventurous traveller, willing to experiment, there is a lot of variety available. Each part of the State has its own speciality - so Jodhpur and Jaisalmer are famous for their 'laddoos', Pushkar for its 'malpuas', Bikaner for its 'rasgullas', Udaipur for its 'dil jani', Jaipur for its 'mishri mawa' and 'ghevar', Ajmer for its 'sohan halwa'; and mouth watering 'jalebis' can be found in all cities. It is difficult to explain the merits of each of these sweets, so whichever city you are in just ask for the local speciality and enjoy it.
