Jicama "Fries"
I tried a new vegetable on the weekend that I have never heard of before. It is called jicama which is actually pronounced hicama. I think that it originally came from Mexico or South America but now it is available all over North America. I never tried it before so I wasn't sure if I would like it or not, but I wanted to give it a try. I did a bit of research on how to prepare this crunchy potato-looking vegetable and I found out that jicama can actually be eaten raw so that is what I decided to do. I peeled off the outer brown skin and found a white, starchy smelling flesh inside. I gave it a taste and found that it's not too bad but I don't think it will ever be one of my favourites. It doesn't really have much of a flavour at all. The texture reminds me of a Japanese or Chinese pear, but it is not sweet because it is a vegetable. I could have eaten it just the way it was, but I wanted something a little more exciting. I found out that you can cut jicama into french fry shapes and season them just the way you would if you were making french fries or oven roasted potatoes, so that is what I did. I cut them into strips like french fries and then I tossed them in a bowl with a little bit of olive oil, salt, black pepper, paprika, and cayenne pepper. They look sort of like french fries but as soon as you bite into the crispy little strips you know you are eating something raw and definitely NOT A FRENCH FRY. I'm not sure if I enjoyed them or not. I ate a few and then I ended up putting some of the "BBQ sauce" that I made on top of them for some more flavour. Jicama is okay, but I don't know if I will buy it again. Maybe I'll do some more research and find out if it can be flavoured differently. related searches : Jicama
