How to rehydrate your body after alcoholic meals or parties?

After a festive meal or a night of drinking, it's not uncommon to wake up feeling intensely tired, with a dry mouth, headaches or a feeling of "body in slow motion". These symptoms are often grouped together under the term hangover (or veisalgia), but their main cause is well known: dehydration.

By understanding what's going on in the body, you can adopt the right reflexes to help your body recover more effectively!

The right reflexes for effective rehydration

1. Drink water regularly

This may seem obvious, but it's the basics. It's best to drink small quantities of water throughout the day, rather than large quantities all at once. Water remains the most effective beverage to help the body regain its equilibrium.

Herbal teas, light broths or soups can also contribute to fluid intake, especially if the stomach is fragile.

2. Provide minerals naturally

Alcohol can cause a drop in certain minerals, such as potassium. Without necessarily turning to supplements, certain foods can help:

  • banana
  • tomatoes
  • vegetables
  • eggs
  • simple pasta or rice

They help you recover without damaging your digestive system.

3. Eat lightly

After too much alcohol, the stomach is often irritated. Specialists recommend avoiding fatty or heavy dishes, in favor of :

  • fruit
  • vegetables
  • soups
  • easy-to-digest foods

This allows the body to concentrate on eliminating alcohol and rehydrating.

4. Sleep and rest

Sleep is essential. Even if alcohol disrupts the quality of sleep, rest is essential to allow the liver and body to recover.

False good ideas to avoid

Some practices are still widespread, but they have no scientific basis.

❌ Drinking alcohol on waking: it doesn't cure the hangover, it only delays the symptoms.

❌ Coffee: it can accentuate dehydration and irritate the stomach.

❌ Intense sport: sweating more can worsen dehydration and increase the risk of discomfort.

There is no method to really speed up alcohol elimination. Only time allows the body to recover fully.

After alcoholic meals or parties, there's no miracle solution. Above all, the body needs :

  • time
  • water
  • rest
  • simple diet

The best prevention is moderation, of course, but once you've overdone it, rehydrating your body calmly and gradually remains the safest and most effective strategy.

Why does alcohol dehydrate so much?

Alcohol acts directly on a hormone called vasopressin, also known as the antidiuretic hormone. This hormone plays a key role in telling the kidneys to retain water. When alcohol is consumed, vasopressin production drops sharply. The result is

  • you urinate more,
  • more fluids are eliminated than consumed,
  • the body finds itself in a water deficit.

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIH), this dehydration, however slight, contributes directly to the classic symptoms of the day after a party: intense thirst, fatigue, headaches, reduced concentration and a feeling of general weakness.

Other factors include stomach irritation, lower blood sugar levels, inflammation and the accumulation of toxic by-products of alcohol metabolism.

The moral is moderation!
