Bellagio Fountain View while lunching at Mon Ami Gabi, Las Vegas
The best character of Las Vegas is the diversity. The city brings in people from all of the world, different stories, the rich poor and the richer. You can see it all pass you by while dining outdoors at Mon Ami Gabi (MAG) in the Paris Hotel. The patio also boosts a prime view of the Bellagio Water Fountains.
   [Playing "Time to Say Goodbye" by Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman] Mon Ami Gabi is a French Bistro with dishes such as escargot, french onion soup, crepes, sandwiches, steak frites and the usual suspects. The dining experience is really the people watching. In the hour and half I spotted lover's quarrels, bride and grooms, crying children, retirees in cowboy hats, so much botox it could turn into a "drinking game," suits, and 80's fashion actually from the 1980s. We arrived without a reservation at lunchtime but our wait was less than 30 mins which we killed by playing slots. (In reality, we didn't want to leave when our names were called because we were on a hot streak.)  MAG serves a warm french baguette with warm butter, which was getting warmer by the minute by the outdoor heat. The bread was crusty and chewy, the server graciously gave us two loafs when we inquired about purchasing the bread to bring home.We had a craving for steak tartare and asked our server if it was available. She asked the kitchen and it can be done at the price of the filet mignon dish, $31.95 because they were using that cut of meat.  The meat was very tender and seasoned very well, paired with toasted crostini, pickled onions, pickles and dijon mustard. The portion was huge since it was an entire filet mignon cut, enough to satisfy two hungry people.  The $12.95 chicken, brie and spinach crepe was sub par but expected since MAG is more famous for the view than the their food. The crepe was mushy and bland, although the spinach brought some freshness to the dish.  Some really hate MAG pommes frites but it is my cup of tea. The potatoes were thinly sliced and fried until very crispy, like the crispy end bits left from a basket of fries. Will I return? Of course. I especially love wearing oversize sunglasses so I could stare extra hard at interesting people without being conspicuous.
