Ed's - An American Dinner amidst the hustle and bustle of London

By donnowhere2eat (Visit website)

The first time I went to Ed's was a few years ago with a good friend and her brother. She raved about the Peanut Butter Milkshake which I was tempted to try once more but seeing that my craving was entirely different that day, I passed on the milkshake. This time I decided to go for the old traditional burger, onion rings and a coke!

\

The Big Bubba (GBP6.35) and Onion Rings (GBP2.95)

The combination was indeed large reflecting the sizeable portions of American food portions. I couldn't finish the rings and left part of the bread behind. But you had the choice of adding a ton of sauces. The Big Bubba is the "Original" with bacon and American cheese.

The beef patty was grilled to perfection with enough moisture and texture left for me to savour the rich beef flavour. The cheese wasn't the stretchy kind which makes it easy to eat without having the strings stretching out of the burger itself. The rings however were the frozen kind instead of freshly cut onions. So that was a bit of a let down. My one peeve however is the prices charged. Despite the portion, I doubt I'd pay GBP6.35 for a burger in the near future unless I start going to a slightly upper class restaurant, even then a burger would be the last thing I'd order.

Ed's does however give you the feeling of a typical diner complete with a jukebox that still works.

The songs available were most definitely from the 50s and 60s with Elvis Presley headlining song choices. The customers were of diverse backgrounds as the outlet I patronised was in the heart of Leicester Square and Piccaddily Circus. No surprises there. The waitresses however were extremely friendly, dispelling my previous notion that diner waitresses were rough and tough like the movies. Everyone was clearly having fun which added to mood of the place.

Needless to say, despite the prices, the place was overall welcoming, clean and typical American.

So what is my verdict?

Ambience               4/5
Food                      4/5
Drinks                    4/5 (they do serve beer here and a load of other drinks especially the milkshake)
Price                      3/5

Average price per person:                  GBP 12.00 (Burger, Side + Drink)

Where is Ed's?

Ed's is also in 2 other locations. So look up the website to know where the nearest Ed's is. If you are missing a piece of American history in the shape of a diner, then Ed's is your place.
