I Cry No Tears For You
It is such a busy time and all sorts of other things are happening as well. But I enjoyed reading Tiffany's latest blog post and had to say a bit because the topic of farm income is near and dear to my heart and something I have been thinking about as of late. Last week I was in the little pharmacy in Smithville picking up a prescription when I was asked to sign a petition indicating my support for pharmacies in their battle against the government and pending legislation. According to their blurb, cuts to services and staff are imminent if the government goes ahead with its plans. Suffice it to say I declined signing the petition, because the first thought at the top of my head was, of course, the fact they are talking to a farmer, and sorry, you don't get my sympathy. Why would I support their cause when one that is even more important is always forgotten? I don't think any pharmacy owners or Shoppers Smug Marts are in danger of going bankrupt. But those who grow the preventative medicine ? good healthy food ? really are. No one is petitioning people to support farmers to raise their income, which would encourage more folks to farm. No one is saying it is criminal that most farmers have a negative income. Most people want it cheap and yes, that is the bottom line. I can't tell you the number of folks that walk away from me when I say my eggs are $3 a dozen. That doesn't even cover my feed and bedding costs, let alone my time cleaning out manure, maintaining buildings, etc. But people are okay with that. Although I do have the rare person who looks me in the eye and says "That's not enough!" So as I plant my spring crops, I look forward to seeing customers, many of whom have become friends. Because despite all the talk of local, it is the same people who keep coming back. And I welcome them with open arms. As would all farmers.
