Las Vacas, Mon't Kiara

My dad used to tell me that if I go to a restaurant, I have to ask for my steak ?well done.? Otherwise, I?d get raw beef and mad cow disease. I should have known he was pulling my leg, after falling for his ?If you swallow watermelon seeds, a tree will grow in your tummy? and ?If you don?t sleep early, the boogieman will come and catch you.?

For many years, I asked for well done steaks until a friend ordered his steak medium rare and asked me to try it. Only then, I realised my dad was just joking -- took me almost 10 years to figure that out. =_=
?Medium rare, please,? I said to the lady at the counter as I picked my cut of meat. Rif echoed the same thing for his steak. We were at Las Vacas, Mon?t Kiara last week, after hearing good things about the steaks there. It is a mini butchery that doubles up as a casual dining place. You can choose to buy the meat and grill it at home, or have it at the restaurant (more expensive) like we did. The ambiance was minimal with chalkboards of their specials on the wall. Not an ideal place for a romantic date but for a fuss-free meal, this will do just fine. A lady bought the last few pieces of wagyu, so I settled for the ribeye grain fed (RM23 per 100gm). rif ordered the ribeye angus (RM28 per 100gm).

My steak had a nicely seared crust on the outside, which gave each bite a little crunch. Inside, the meat was moist, tender and bursting with flavour.

Between the two steaks, I liked the Angus better. The meat was more tender, had plenty of beefy flavour and boasted a higher fat content. I didn?t care much for the garden salad and garlic bread ? both were average tasting.

We ordered a plate of fries (RM5.50) to munch on while waiting for our steaks. While it was freshly fried and crispy, it was of the frozen variety. They don?t serve water by the tap, so be prepared to fork out at least RM4 for a bottle of water.


Dinner came up to RM158.65. rif?s Angus (about 275gm) cost RM77.30 and my grain fed steak (about 280gm) was RM64.85. I wouldn?t consider this cheap, but it?s definitely more affordable compared to most steakhouses. We would probably buy the steaks and take them home to grill...since the uncooked version is cheaper at about RM13 per 100gm.

Verdict: Come here for good quality steaks at reasonable prices.
