Letter floor game

By Recipes4Kidz (Visit website)

This is a game, I made up to help my KG1 son remember his letter sounds and words. It was really fun to play with his grade 1 sister, and very easy to make it suitable for both ages.

Things you’ll need

Letter sheets or cards (see below to make one the same as mine)
A dice
Place holders for the game, could be anything from around the house.
Object cards (optional – from the letter sheets below)

How to play

Take turns to throw the dice, and move the place holder over the letters according to the dice number

When you land on a letter you have to say the letter sound (or name or both – according to your child’s level), and a word that starts with this letter.

The cool thing about this, is that for my Kindergartener, I make him only say the sound and a word, as for my grade 1 child, I make her say a verb or adjective that starts with the letter. You can easily make up your own rules to suit what you’d like your child to practice.

The picture cards are to help your child to come up with a word, so he can go through the cards and pick one.

I deliberately made this game into a circle, so there will be no winner. This way, it’s fun without the stress of competition, and you can keep going round and round till you’re tired :).

Another idea

This method, of slowly forming the letter, makes the child really focus on its shape.

To make the letter sheets and object cards:

Print out the letter sheets that your child have already learnt (or needs to learn)
Have him cut the object stickers/pictures at the bottom of each page
Have him paint the letters, and colour the object cards
Mount each letter on a coloured piece of paper
stick the small pictures on a coloured piece of paper too, and cut them out with a small coloured border. Laminate them if possible.
