MTR - for your quick fixes and some ice-cream

Enough has been written about the MTR restaurant and its fabulous thindi and meals. What I am writing about here today is about this quaint little MTR outlet that sells only their ready-to-eat range as well as mixes. This place has been around for a couple of years now and I have always meant to write about it. Outside you have hordes of children surrounding the MTR softee man who is busy churning out ice-creams the whole day. 

Once inside, the outlet is small but very neatly arranged. It starts with the breakfast mixes, both ready-to-eat as well as the instant mixes. Little wonder then that place is full of bachelors as well as harried housewives. The good part about the mixes is that they are available in a variety of sizes. You have it all from jumbo packs to sachets and everything in between. 

After the breakfast mixes come the spices and cooking powders/pastes. You will find their entire range as well as some things that don't figure in retail outlets that sell MTR products. There are samosas and cutlets, packaged and ready-to-eat. 

Next comes the freezer which has the frozen versions of parathas, dosas, idlies as well as ice-creams and MTR milk based drinks. There is also a pyramid display of Indian sweets like gulab jamuns and rasgullas. Now in the center of this store is a glass enclosed kitchen. From time to time, MTR staff will walk around with offerings that are made from the very same packages that you are looking through. So be ready to taste some rava idlies or a bit of puliogare or even a nice warm gulab jamun.

Upstairs used to be a cafe that earlier sold things that were made from the packages downstairs, but over time, they felt that ice-creams were a better bet and now they have a full fledged ice-cream parlour which is full pretty much all the time. 

Overall a nice place to stop by to stock up on some emergency supplies. The breakfast mixes are good and I have tried almost all. I also love their Bhindi masala and Dal Makhani, though I must say that I make better versions of both.
