Omgosh,I made bread!!
Omgosh,I made bread!! Now, how cool is that?! Ok, I know it's not cool... as in, Cool. But hey! I made bread. Woohoo! hee! All my husband wanted to do for Father's Day, was clean his car. I wonder what my Dad would have wanted to do? Go for a lunch at a Chinese restaurant I figure. So ok. Clean you car. I'll make bread! ![]() I've always thought it was such a daunting task. Kneading, punching, beating, rising, waiting. I think more then any of the ing's, waiting is the most exhausting. Waiting for it to rise and then waiting again. And yet, again. But today, I practiced my patience. I mixed, beat, punched and waited. The waiting was so long, that I went around gallavanting around town, shopping, catching a film and a theatre show and ended with a spa visit. *yes, I do dream! har har!* ![]() Lucky for me, Daniela thinks that everything I make is edible... and she was all: Wow, Mom! Bread! Daddy! Mommy made bread! The hubby's response? Now we don't need to buy bread anymore! *aww blush* ![]() I kinda like knowing that I was able to make my own bread. It's probably cheaper to buy commercially made bread, so no... I'm not going to start waking up at 4am to beat and punch a ball of dough to make homemade bread for the family. It's just that I've been having a love affair with bread these days. Bread and dainty cookies. But more then the cookies, obviously, bread had been a big part of my day. Toast for breakfast. Tuna sandwiches for lunch. So then grew my curiosity for bread-making. ![]() But look! Isn't it pretty? Hello you pweetty, pweetty loaf. I'm Pia, what's your name? And so after all that, I learned that I had made an Italian Cheese Bread. ![]() I don't know why it's Italian.... but I do know why it's a cheese bread. Italian maybe cuz I used Parmesan cheese? I didn't have enough Parmesan, so I used 10g Parmesan and 50g Cheddar Cheese. I know, I know... I only really ever have cheddar because the kids like it. I'd probably fancy better cheese from time to time, but well, whatever. It was good bread. Let's call it a Parmesan Loaf. There. Simple. ![]() Parmesan Loaf A Variation from AllRecipes.com 7g Active Dried Yeast 295ml Warm Water (115 degrees C) 25g Sugar 3g Salt 8g Garlic Salt 60g Parmesan 375g AP Flour Cornmeal In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water. Mix well and make sure there are no lumps of yeast. Beat in the sugar, salt, garlic salt and cheese. Mix well. Add 2 cups of the flour and beat it until smooth. Stir in, enough if not all the remaining flour, to make a soft dough. Turn the dough on to a floured surface, and knead it until smooth and elastic. This should take about 6-8 minutes. Transfer the dough into a bowl, greased with Olive Oil. Turn it over once or twice to coat. Cover the bowl with a damp towel, and leave it to rise for an hour. I placed it in the oven with the light switched on for a cozy effect! When the dough has risen, turn it onto a floured surface and punch it a few times, knead, punch, knead. Divide the dough in two, and shape each one into logs. Place the logs onto a lined baking tray, sprinkled with cornmeal. I didn't have any cornmeal and sprinkled it intead with a wee bit of flour. Cover again, and let it rise another hour (or two... I slept... so I came back after two hours!) :) Brush the loaves with water, and diagonally slice the tops. Fill an small pan with hot water, and place it in the bottom rack of the oven. In the middle rack, bake the bead at 400 degrees F for 20-25 minutes or until golden, and a hollow sound is made when you tap on the bread. Mine were done in 20minutes. I switched the oven off, and left it for another 2 minutes. Beautiful. Next time I'll be a bit more adventurous and probably sprinkle it with parmesan or even add pepperoni and stuff! Ooohh! Can't wait :)
