Recyclable Palm Leaf Plates Review
X
I received two sets of different size, palm leaf plates from Marxfoods to test. They are such a nice bunch at Marxfoods, One set would have been enough to test, but they sent two, they never skimp on quantity, or quality for that matter. Love those guys! X The hexagonal shape of the plates is not my favorite, but it?s just a shape, and I was not asked to test the shape.
My first opinion of the plates was that they may be too expensive for being disposable. For a small amount of 25 plates, the unit price is more than a dollar. For larger quantities of 100 the price is reduced to about 70 cents each. Better, but still more expensive than conventional disposable paper plates, let?s say at 20 cents per plate in the most expensive scenario. Of course going green and being fashionable is always more costly to the consumer. I never understood that. If the government is interested in encouraging a cleaner environment why don?t they put some laws on manufacturing that benefits the consumer? Alright, that?s a different subject, let?s go back to the original. X
So I thought… well why would I buy or not buy these plates? What are the pros and the cons? In my opinion for the average person, these plates are a bit too expensive to use just once. The redeeming factor is that they can be reused more than once but then… it does forfeit the purpose of buying these plates for the sake of not washing dishes. X I found a very good reason and place to use them though, and that is at the beach and on a boat. These are places where you wouldn?t take your good china, but you?d want to avoid taking non recyclable materials, that could land in the water and hurt the marine life. X
X These plates are really organically good looking, earthy, natural, sturdy, have the feel of a thin to medium strong cardboard, hold up well even after washing, as long as they don?t sit in water too long. They dry strong again, biodegradable, can be recycled in your compost, if you garden. They do lose their shape a bit after washing, but that?s a minor drawback. All in all I feel they can have a place in my world, even for a budget conscious individual. But throwing away these plates, after one use, may be too much of a luxury for those money conscious, like myself. So clean them well with a light brushing and reuse these plates again, they look beautiful in your cupboard, they present well and they will not come apart on your lap or seep through, like other paper plates, and when they have no more life you?ll have the satisfaction of knowing you acted environmentally sound.
