Star Fruit
Every time I pass these weird little fruits in the supermarket, I want to buy them. I had no idea what they tasted like and no idea how to use them, but this week my daughter asked me to get them, so I figured we could figure it out together. We got the groceries home, unloaded and then I promptly forgot all about them. As I was making dinner the other night, I saw them, panicked and pulled them out of the fridge. There was some brown spots on the spines, but I washed them and then trimmed all the brown spots (I trimmed the spines all around, actually), sliced them and put them on top of a salad of romaine, cucumber and plum tomatoes. I drizzled a bit of home made Italian dressing on top and we all loved it. The fruit adds a bit of sweetness, but not too much. It has a firm consistency and is really quite delicious. I will be buying star fruit way more often and this has inspired me to try to use one new ingredient each week… Be advised, you’re not supposed to eat them if you have any kind of renal failure, but if your kidneys function properly you won’t have a problem.
