How to spot a bad restaurant: 7 warning signs to be aware of

Going to a restaurant should always be a pleasure: we go there to relax, to be served, to eat well, to enjoy a moment together, with family or friends. But sometimes, we find ourselves faced with a disappointing experience, or even a complete failure. And while certain signs are unmistakable, you still need to know how to spot them. Here are seven clear indicators, validated by food critics and tested (sometimes to our detriment), that should alert you even before the first bite.

1. An empty restaurant at peak times

Friday evening, 8pm. You walk into a restaurant and... no one. Not a single customer, or just two occupied tables, while all the other establishments in the neighborhood are full. This is often the very first sign that something is amiss. Of course, there's a fine line to be drawn: a restaurant may be new, poorly located, or a victim of unforeseen circumstances. But if this ghostly atmosphere is repeated, especially at key times, there's a good chance that people will avoid it on purpose. And if the locals don't go there, why risk it?

2. Unpleasant or aggressive service

A good welcome can save an average meal. Conversely, unpleasant service can ruin a successful meal. If, on arrival, someone looks at you sideways or speaks to you curtly, this is often a bad sign. And if there's a problem - a wrong dish, botched cooking, an oversight on the bill - the staff's attitude says a lot about the establishment. A waiter who accuses you, shrugs his shoulders or refuses to acknowledge a mistake shows that here, the customer is not the priority. Worse still, it may reveal internal tensions or poor management.

3. Questionable hygiene

Cleanliness is non-negotiable. And it's not just a question of comfort: it's a strong signal of seriousness and respect for the customer. Sticky floors, dirty toilets, poorly cleaned tables... these are all visible signs that should immediately arouse your vigilance. Because if what you see is dirty, imagine what you don't see in the kitchen. Also check the hygiene rating if it's displayed, or take a look at online customer reviews - if they all point in the same direction, you'd better run.

4. Ill-treated, poorly trained or understaffed staff

This point is more subtle, but just as revealing. Servers who are stressed, overworked, poorly organized or clearly unhappy often indicate a management problem. It's not their fault - on the contrary. If a restaurant doesn't train its staff, doesn't listen to them or doesn't respect them, you can feel it everywhere: on the plates, in the service, in the atmosphere. A good restaurant is also a well-treated team. And it shows.

5. A menu that is too long or inconsistent

An 8-page menu of pizzas, sushi, burgers, fondues and pad thai? Run away. When a restaurant claims to do everything, it often doesn't do anything very well. A menu that's too broad usually means frozen products, sloppy recipes and a blurred identity. On the other hand, a short, coherent, seasonal and frequently updated menu is a good indicator of fresh, mastered cuisine.

6. A fake, too Instagrammable atmosphere

A wall of pink neon lights, artificial flowers everywhere, golden armchairs... if everything seems thought out solely for Instagram photos, it's because the culinary experience takes a back seat. Of course, a pretty decor is a plus. But when image takes precedence over taste, you end up with a movie set and a tasteless plate. And the atmosphere can quickly turn into a noisy, uncomfortable gimmick.

7. A massive presence of guest influencers

When every post on the web is labeled #ad or "free meal", the sincerity of reviews should be taken carefully. This doesn't mean that the restaurant is necessarily bad, but if it only exists because of advertising, ask yourself some questions. What's more, these high-profile places often attract crowds that aren't always there to eat, which can spoil the experience for you, the simple diner.
