Super Bowl is one of the most watched sporting events in the world, attracting millions of viewers every year. But beyond soccer, it's also a must-see event for food lovers. Far from being a mere detail, food plays a central role in this celebration, where culinary traditions are marked by abundance and excess. Between conviviality and over-consumption, we tell you more ;).
An extraordinary gastronomic celebration
According to the American Institute of Food Distribution, this is the second most important day of the year in terms of food and beverage consumption, just after Thanksgiving. The numbers are impressive: 1.25 billion chicken wings, 50 million cans of beer, 119 million pounds of avocados, 11 million slices of pizza, not to mention potato chips, pretzels, popcorn and other snacks.
The psychological and nutritional impact of this abundance
While these numbers speak to the magnitude of the event, they can also create food anxiety. The Calories Control Council estimates that the average American consumes around 2,400 extra calories during Super Bowl day, mostly from processed, high-fat foods. This over-consumption is often relayed by the media in the form of sensationalist statistics, contributing to a climate of dietary guilt. Yet this approach risks undermining a balanced relationship with food by creating a sense of judgment around the food choices made during the event.
Marketing, an insidious ally of junk food
The week leading up to the Super Bowl sees a 15% increase in snack sales in the U.S., representing around $670 million in 2024 (source: ConcordiaUniversity) Potato chips, corn tortillas, pretzels, chicken wings and pizzas are omnipresent, reinforcing the association between pleasure, conviviality and junk food. This staging of the "Super Bowl feast" contributes to trivializing overconsumption and perpetuating a food culture where excess is not only accepted, but encouraged.
