An accidental birth in difficult times
The history of Irish Coffee dates back to the 1940s, in the middle of the Second World War. In Foynes, a small Irish airport that served as a stopover for transatlantic seaplanes, passengers arrived tired and cold after long journeys.
It was against this backdrop that Joseph Sheridan, chef at the airport's restaurant, came up with the idea of creating a hot, comforting drink to warm up the travelers. The inspiration came from a particularly cold and rainy day when a flight was canceled and passengers were stranded at the airport.
With the intention of offering passengers something special, Sheridan decided to add whisky to the coffee being served. The unexpected combination pleased the travelers so much that the drink soon became famous at the airport. One of the passengers, upon tasting the drink, exclaimed: "This isn't Brazilian coffee, it's Irish coffee!". And so Irish Coffee was born.
Irish Coffee's journey to the world
The fame of Irish Coffee spread quickly, and the drink soon became a symbol of Ireland. In 1951, journalist Stanton Delaplane visited Ireland and tried Irish Coffee at Shannon Airport. On his return to San Francisco, Delaplane, in partnership with the owner of the Buena Vista Cafe, Jack Koeppler, popularized the drink in the United States.
The Buena Vista Cafe became the "American home of Irish Coffee", and the recipe spread around the world. Today, Irish Coffee is enjoyed by people of all ages and nationalities and is one of the most famous hot cocktails in the world.
