Meatballs with sauce (cufte)

600 g of beef mince

400 g of pork mince

1 onion, finely chopped

1 clove of garlic, finely chopped

1/3 of a cup of rice

1 egg

2 rounded teaspoons of paprika

1 dessert spoons of Vegeta

1 red capsicum, quartered

5 dessert spoons of oil

2 rounded dessert spoons of plain flour


extra dessert spoon of Vegeta

250 g of Tomato Paste




  • Boil rice until just cooked. Rinse and drain.
  • In a large bowl mix together both minces, cooked rice, onion, garlic, paprika, vegeta, egg, salt and pepper.In a large pot place the oil and flour.
  • Stir over heat until hot and add the capsicum. Cook stirring for 1 minute then slowly add water, enough to come halfway up the sides of pot.
  • Add in the extra vegeta and some salt and pepper. Bring to the boil. Once boiling, stir in the tomato paste and reduce heat.
  • Shape meat mixture into balls a bit smaller than a tennis ball and carefully drop them in the liquid.
  • Turn up heat, if needed, to bring the mixture to just boiling then reduce heat and simmer for around 1 and a 1/2 hours.
  • Check for seasoning!Serve in large bowls with fresh bread for dipping.
