Gluten Free Halloween Natural Candy and Organic Treats

By Gluten Free Foodies (Visit website)

It is that time of year when the pumpkin fields and spiders are busy getting ready for Halloween! I guess this year I can consider myself as a Eco-friendly Halloween decorator if I just let the spiders do what they do ... so no decorations this year because the spiders are extra festive.  Yikes!

I love visiting the pumpkin fields just down the way.  So many varieties, shapes, colors and sizes!  I live on a small island just across the Puget Sound from Seattle.  It is a quaint island of about 20 thousand people and most holidays are celebrated in full costume and decorations. Most holidays we meet "in town" and have some sort of event to celebrate the occasion.  Halloween is especially fun to see the kids young and old, dress up and trick or treat in and out of the shops in town.  It is not the way we used to do it when I was a tot but times have changed.  I actually think it is kind of cool to be in a big group of ghouls and fools to see the creative costumes.

Because things are done differently these days, I personally don't buy the jumbo bags of candy.  I would much rather make something like a festive. So today I thought I would take my walk through the pumpkin fields to find some extra inspiration.  I couldn't help but think about all the wonderful things that you can make with pumpkins: of course ... pies, scones, muffins, breads, cookies and yes ... candied pumpkin! I really love to roast the pumpkin seeds with olive oil and sea salt in the oven.

I do realize that Halloween isn't the same without ... candy!
So I have put together a short list of my favorite Organic and Natural candies that I like to give as treats on Halloween or anytime of the year.

One thing to keep in mind ... Yes, it is cool to be natural ...

Surf Sweets - Organic, Natural, No Corn Syrup or GMO's- Look for their Sour Worms in the Halloween Packs and other varieties at Whole Foods Markets!

Enjoy Life Chocolate Bars - click on this link for a discount print out - Free of gluten, dairy, soy, peanut and tree nuts and casein. Crispy Rice, Milk and Dark Chocolate variety.

Kaia Foods Fruit Leathers - raw leathers with flavor combinations like Vanilla Pear, Ginger Lime and many more.

Kind bars - Variety of nut and dried fruit bars, 6 new flavors!

Stretch Island Fruit Co. - all natural fruit strips with your favorite fruits.

Bissinger's Naturals Gummy Pandas - Great flavors - Pomegranate White Tea, Blueberry Acai, Apricot Green Tea and many more.

Halloween Treats to make at home

candied pumpkin strips
pumpkin seeds or trail mix with dried fruit, other seeds and nuts
caramel or fudge apples
popcorn balls
festive decorated cupcakes and cookies

My favorite candies ... that I love and enjoy on a rare occasion at the movies ... they actually say Gluten Free!

I started thinking about all the lists that I see floating around on the web for Halloween. I find it hard to suggest some because most of it is so unnatural and filled with preservatives, high fructose corn syrup, soy, etc., and even though they are Gluten Free, I don't eat them anymore. Just in case that is what you are looking for, I have added a link to a list on Celiac.com  for Gluten Free Candies.

Trick or Treat ... smell my homemade Gluten Free treats ... give me something "good for me" to eat!
