Indian Sarees

By niya's world (Visit website)

The traditional garment for Indian women of all ages, this six yards of cloth adds grace and elegance to a woman?s body. The sari is draped differently depending on the region but the most common style of draping is for the sari to be tucked into and wrapped around the waist, with one end then draped over the shoulder - which forms the pallu or pallav ( end panel of the saree ) and is embellished variously depending on the region, baring the midriff. The sari has evolved through the ages, and woven or machine made, it is a fashion statement even today.

Never outdated, the sari can and is worn for any function - be it religious, for a wedding, a party or simply at home.

Benarasi Brocade - Famous for its brocade silk saris, Varnasi or Benares is one of the richest weaving craft centres of India

Pochampalli Saree- An exclusive weave invented by the weavers, from the Padmashali or Devang communities in Pochampalli in the Nalgoda district of Andhra Pradesh. An original is best picked up at Pochampalli and the Andhra Pradesh State Handloom Weavers Co - operative Society ( APCO ).

Paithani Saree -It's an indispensable piece in every Maharashtrian woman's collection of sarees reserved for important events. It's classified by its motifs such as bangadi mor ( peacock in bangle ), munia ( parrot ) and mango etc.

Kerala Saree - A trademark of Kerala tradition even today for festivals and weddings.

Bandhini sarees are representative of Gujarat and Rajasthan's contribution towards the garment. Dyed in bright colors, mainly yellow, red, green , pink and black, and embellished with mirror work.

Kanjeevaram Pattu Saree -A must in the South Indian bridal trousseau, weddings and festival too.

Maheshwari Sarees - Extremely light in weight, the Maheshwari was originally made of pure silk from Madhya Pradesh

Whether it is the Paithani from Maharashtra, the Pochampalli from Andhra Pradesh or the Kanjeevaram from Tamil Nadu, the list of Indian saris is almost endless. And not only are there more styles than there are states, each one is also a unique statement of the art and culture of the region it represents.
