My Vegan Bucket List

By Vegan Machine (Visit website)

VegNews Magazine has complied a list of: "99 absolute must-dos before you retire to that great tofu farm in the sky, " a.k.a. The Vegan Bucket List.  After reading through them I am happy to say that I have completed many of the things on the list, but have many many more that need to be completed.  Here is a quick list of the things I have done in my vegan days.

#3 Ask your (non-vegan) family or friends to try a vegan meal, day, or week.
I make vegan food all of the time for my non-vegan family and friends.  I have been known to host vegan holiday dinners, send vegan goodies with my husband to give to his non-vegan band Sober Down, hold my birthday dinners at 100% vegan restaurants and challenge my non-vegan friends to try veganism for periods of time!

#6 Write a letter to a vegan activist who is in prison.
Everyone needs a little love right?  Especially when you are in prison for trying to free the innocent.  Pretty selfless.

#10 Accept that your veganism is bigger than you and your circumstances.  Don't get bummed about it.
Sometimes it is tough to be vegan.  You sacrifice things that are "normal" and food that is "normal."  Sometimes it is hard to see the bigger picture and know the results are real.  It's also hard to accept that even though you try so hard to make a change, you are only one person, and you can only make decisions for yourself.

#14 Be vegan until 6 PM, and then stay vegan until the following day.  Repeat.
Vegan everyday.

#15 Have a pizza bake-off with every vegan cheese to discover your favorite.
I can't say I have had a "pizza bake-off" but I have definitely experimented with every vegan cheese I am aware of.  Daiya definitely wins!

#18 Work with local businesses to add more vegan options to their menus.
I have been in contact with several businesses in Utah County about ways to better serve the vegan community.

#22 Become a vegan myth-busting machine!
Try me...

#26 Give fun gifts such as cookbooks, baked goods, Vegan Etsy Jewelry, and wine every chance you get.
I usually give vegan wine for Xmas, cookbooks and baked goods are a must for birthdays!

#27 Take a vegan tour of Los Angeles.
I haven't gone to all of the places named in VegNews mag but I have visited Real Food Daily and Native Foods.  Next week I am going on another mini vegan tour of L.A. and San Diego.  Post to come!

#30 Inspire at least one person to become vegan.
My daily mission.

#38 Don't judge meat eaters, they will just stop listening to you.
This gets harder and harder the longer I am vegan.  I don't have anything against people who eat meat, I used to be one of those people after-all.  But my love for veganism becomes stronger and stronger everyday and sometimes I feel like the rest of the world is stuck in an old habit, while all of the info is there, they are just ignoring it.

#40 Join Twitter and Facebook, follow or friend a bunch of your non-vegan acquaintances, and send along great recipes, videos of cute farm animals and timely vegan news.
Story of my online life!
Twitter
Facebook

#42 Help the environment by opting for a bicycle or running shoes over a car.
I definitely still drive my eco-friendly Smart Car, but I do have a lovely new bike and a great pair of running shoes!

#44 Remind your non-vegan loved ones that if it's good enough for President Clinton, it's good enough for them.
I actually said this once.

#45 Cook an entirely vegan holiday dinner for your friends and family.
Tim and I hosted a vegan Thanksgiving last year for our non-vegan and vegans friends.  It was so fun!

#46 Start a balcony herb garden.
It's not on a balcony, but in pots on the porch.  Yum!

#50 Create something that helps humans feel compassion for animals.
My blog and my animal ingredient guides! (contact me if you want one for free: kaycee@veganmachine.com

#52 Get caught up on your veg-friendly reads by joining the VegNews Book Club.
Of course I am in the book club.  Just got done with Eating Animals, great book

#54 Donate all of your non-vegan clothes to charity.
Done.

#57 go on a Vegas-style bender at Ronald's Donuts.
I haven't done this quite yet, but it is on the agenda to stop just for this in Vegas next week on our way to California!

#63 Send a vegan care package.
I have definitely been known to do this.  One of my favorite things!

#64 Become a vegan hostess extraordinaire by throwing holiday parties, brunches, bonfires, barbecues, fondue nights, and so on.
I host any vegan event I can!

#69 Memorize five quick comebacks to the question "Where do you get your protein?"
Veggies
Nuts
Veg Milk
Boca Chik'N
Beans

#70 Read Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer.
Just got done!  That was our last assignment for the VegNews Book Club!

#73 Write a well-thought out letter to the editor promoting veganism.
Every chance I can get.

#74 Have your vitamin D and B12 levels tested.
I'm an awesome vegan, I've got the tests to prove it!

#75  Start a Vegan Drinks meet up in your hometown and get to know you local vegans, boozily.
No need to start a Vegan Drinks, we already have one in place that I attend.  Fun!

#79 Own at least one cookbook by Isa Chandra Moskowitz, Colleen Patrick-Goudreau, and Ani Phyo.
I own almost all of Isa and Colleen's books!  None of Ani's though, I'm not raw, so no need.

#81 Find a vegan restaurant in every city you visit, no matter how remote.
One of my favorite hobbies!

#82  Study the history of the women's, civil rights', gay rights', or any other social-justice movement that has bettered the lives of beings who were once treated as property.  Learn from them!
Done.

#83 Watch Earthlings at least once.  Then, if you feel yourself getting burned out or losing your drive for  veganism, watch it again.
No need to watch Earthlings twice for me, the message was loud and clear the first time.  If you haven't seen this documentary, you need to!

#85 Write to Food Network and request more vegan content.
Done!

#86  Make a soup in five minute flat using a Vita-Mix blender.
Ok so I don't have a Vita-Mix blender, but I do have the not-so-great Magic Bullet that I can make a quick Cream of Broccoli Soup with in about 3 minutes.  It's delicious!

#87 Rescue a companion animal.
I have yet to rescue a dog or cat, but I have taken in many many abandoned animals when I worked at PetSmart.  Rats, mice, hamsters, snakes, lizards, birds, fish and tarantulas.  I once had a small zoo of rescued companions.

#89 Donate money to your favorite animal charities.
I donate to P.E.T.A. and Ching Farm Rescue & Sanctuary any chance I can!  You can too, on the right side of my page :)

#90 Attend (or, even better yet, have!) a vegan wedding.
I wasn't vegan when we got married but I was a vegetarian.  Tim was not at the time either, so we did a 1/2 vegetarian and 1/2 not-so-veg wedding.  It was really pretty fun.  I got tons of compliments on the veg food from the guests!

#93 Read every issue of VegNews ever published.
How could I miss the best vegan magazine available!?

#95  Admire the work of your favorite vegan artist.
One of my favorite artists of all time: Kurt Halsey!  Awesome vegan and animal rights activist from Portland, OR.  Both of my tattoos on my back are of his work.

#96 Study T. Colin Campbell's The China Study as if your life depended on it.
Great book!

#99 Pen your own vegan manifesto.  Keep it in a place that's easy to see, just in case you need a little reminder.
Done!

*****

A few other things that I would recommend doing if you are vegan (or not), that I have done (or participated in) and loved:

Get a vegan pen pal through L.O.V.E. Vegan Pen Pals.
Start a vegan recipe blog.
Host a potluck.
Start a vegan Twitter (awesome vegan community).
Try the mac & cheese at City Cakes & Cafe.
Try the mashed potatoes and gravy and "tender tigers" at Vertical Diner.
Host a vegan cooking night with your friends.
Run a 5K to help animals in your community.

What does your vegan bucket list look like?
Any ideas for things I should add to mine?
