Simple Shortbread Bisuits and Day in the Kitchen Gone Wrong
If there was anything that could possibly have gone wrong today - then believe me, it has. I have to blame it on the black cat that ran across when I looked to right outside the bus windows this morning. I knew it! I am very quick to pick up on my peripheral sightings, and I really should learn to ignore them when I see anything black! Sure enough, I saw something run quickly and when I turned to look, there was a black cat running across. And although it technically didn't cross my path, it was half way across it's journey according to my eyes. It's silly. I like to think that it isn't true. But really! ![]() I thought I would make something simple tonight. Take it easy, jump into bed and have a good read. I decided on Shortbread Biscuit, whose simplicity never fails to please me. But noooo... what happened? The oven started coughing up smoke!! Yes! Smoke! Waaaah! What's happening? My oven!! Huhuhuhuh. Ok, not my oven, but the landlord's. So I rang him. Hi Jay!! Hi Pia, what's wrong? *Yes, you know that when I call you, there is something wrong*. The good thing is that he is a really sweet man. Very approachable. And he also said he'd check it out and possibly replace it with a new one. So he is now very dear to my heart. I need to form a club: I heart my landlord. ![]() Left with shortbread batter, my sweet darling husband wisely suggested that I use the mini-oven. Of course! Why didn't I think of that? So into the mini-oven my little shortbread biscuits went. By this time, the girls wanted to go to bed. Miqu had just woken from a very late nap, and felt that she needed to carry on over to bedtime. Daniela decided it was story time. So then again, my sweet darling husband suggested that I put the girls to bed and he would look after my Shortbread. Of course! Why didn't I think of that? No longer then half an hour in the oven, please, and listen for the timer. ![]() Once heard Alice *Daniela's litte non-Barbie doll from the $2 shop (bless her simplicity!)* fall to the ground, I knew Daniela was fast asleep. *Aaaah*. I decided to go check on my biscuits because it definitely felt like more then a half hour had past. Are they ready? Yes. Where are they? *Gestures towards the oven* My very sweet, darling husband said he didn't want to disturb us and that he had turned the oven off at exactly 30 minutes. Where were the biscuits? Inside the oven!! Waaaaahhhh! My shouldabeen white, crumbly soft shortbread biscuits had turned into brown crunchy biscuits!! All was not lost however, since I had managed to salvage a batch. Still pretty... and they turned out pretty good though for a near disaster. Kitchen 37B smelled of baked shortbread... and I think that alone helped in calming me. Mmmmm... butter. ![]() Simple Shortbread 250g AP Flour 1g Baking Powder 2g Salt 30g White Sugar + Extra for topping 60g Icing Sugar 230g Butter, Softened Preheat the oven to 175 degrees C, and line a cookie sheet with baking paper. Cream the butter and sugars together. Fold in the flour, salt, and baking powder. Gently knead into a dough. The texture will be crumbly at first. Be careful that you do not over-knead it. Cut the dough using your preferred cookie cutter, and sprinkly each biscuit dough with white sugar. Bake for 30 minutes. Remove from the oven, and cook on a wire rack. related searches : Simple
