Wine of the Week: Castano Monastrell 2006
Last night I met up with a buddy from back in my college days and we dined at a fairly new restaurant on 19th Street in NYC: Socarrat Paella Bar. Since it was late, we skipped the paella and just ordered a bunch of tapas--the perfect late night treat. Just the right portions--my favorite was the sizzling shrimp because there was a lot of garlic. I also enjoyed the chorizo. Next time I hope to get there earlier so I can try out the paella--they even have one that's vegetarian. And of course I had to try out the red wine. I opted for the Castano Monastrell 2006. This Spanish table wine has so many flavors going on at once that it can be a bit overwhelming to your tastebuds at first. But after a few sips, it's smooth sailing. It's heavy on the berries, but there's also a pepperty kick to it. The finish is hard to describe; Gary V of Wine Library TV likens it to seaweed! Not sure I agree with that one--I think you should judge for yourself. Here are a few photos of the restaurant--has a nice vibe. Check it out if you get a chance: Socarrat Paella Bar 259 West 19th Street, between 7th and 8th New York, NY 10011 212-462-1000 related searches : Wine
