Anti-waste: find out why you shouldn't throw away onion peels!
When preparing a dish, almost all of us use onions. Sautéed in butter, in soup or even raw in salads and burgers, onions are one of the essential items in the kitchen.
You may not know it, but onion skins are versatile and can be reused. So don't throw it away, here are some tips ↓↓
Use the peel to season dishes
Recover and dry the onion peels in an oven preheated to 210°F (100°C) for 30 minutes or until they are very crispy. Then grind them into a powder. This powder can be used as a seasoning to enhance the flavor of dishes. Sprinkle over salads, soups or pasta for a subtle and delicious touch of onion.
Make a broth for your dishes
Boil the onion peels in water to create a super fragrant broth. Leave to infuse for a few minutes and then strain the liquid to make a flavored broth that can be used as a base for sauces, stews or marinades. This simple method will add flavor to dishes without the need to add other ingredients (but of course, season to taste).
An excellent fertilizer for plants
Onion peels can also be used in the garden. Grind them up and incorporate them into the soil of your indoor plants or garden. The nutrients in onion peels act as a natural fertilizer, promoting plant growth and improving soil health.
Throw them in the compost instead of the garbage
If you have a compost bin at home, don't hesitate to add onion peels as they are very rich in antioxidants, minerals, zinc, phosphorus, vitamin C and iron. The peels decompose very quickly and even help to keep harmful bacteria away. However, if you have vermicompost, don't add the husks as the worms don't like onions.
