The Tamago Sando is a true hidden treasure of the Japanese convenience stores, the konbini. It's a sandwich that may look simple, but it's incredibly delicate, taking Japan by storm and now well beyond its borders. You've probably already tasted egg sandwiches, but believe us, Tamago Sando takes this staple to a whole new level ;-)

What is Tamago sando?

In its purest form, Tamago Sando is a Japanese egg sandwich. It consists of perfectly cooked hard-boiled eggs, mixed with creamy Japanese mayonnaise, and sandwiched between two slices of ultra-moist sandwich bread, often crustless for added sweetness. It's simplicity at its purest, but with textures and flavors that seduce from the very first bite.

The secret of Tamago Sando lies in the details: the Japanese mayonnaise has a slightly more acidic and sweet taste than that found in Europe, and the bread is incomparably light, almost like biting into a cloud. The result is an incredibly soft, melt-in-your-mouth sandwich, perfect for a quick lunch break or impromptu picnic.

Why is it so popular?

The success of Tamago Sando lies mainly in its silky texture and its balance between the creaminess of the eggs and the lightness of the bread. But beyond its simplicity, it also embodies a certain Japanese culinary minimalism, where each ingredient is carefully selected and prepared to sublimate flavors without superfluous artifice.

Japan's konbini, known for their wide range of quality ready-to-eat dishes, have made Tamago Sando a real star on their shelves. Easy to eat, practical and simply delicious, it has won the hearts of Japanese, travelers and gourmets the world over!

Ingredients required:

  • 4 slices crustless sandwich bread
  • 3 eggs (hard-boiled)
  • 2 tbsp. Japanese mayonnaise (Kewpie here)
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 pinch sugar
  • 1 pinch pepper

How to prepare it at home?

  1. Cook the eggs in a pot with boiling water for 10 minutes. Once the hard-boiled eggs are cooked, place them under cold running water to cool, then shell them.
  2. Place the eggs in a bowl and mash with a fork to crumble them.
  3. You can crumble them more or less finely, depending on your taste.
  4. Add the mayonnaise, milk, salt, sugar and pepper.
  5. Mix well.
  6. Spread the mixture evenly over the 4 slices of sandwich bread, then close the sandwiches. Chill before serving.
  7. And voilà, it's ready!

An extra gourmet touch?

If you're in the mood for a little more indulgence, some variations add fried chicken or breaded pork to Tamago Sando. This combination between the creamy sweetness of eggs and the crispness of fried meat creates a veritable explosion of textures. You can try it with karaage (Japanese fried chicken) or even crispy bacon for a more Western touch. The result? An absolutely irresistible texture and an even more flavorful sandwich!

"Fruit Sando", the sweet variant!

If you thought sando were only available in savory flavors, think again! There are also sweet versions of this famous Japanese sandwich. In these variations, the main ingredient is fresh fruit (strawberry, kiwi), topped with sweet whipped cream - pure sweetness!
