Watermelon: much more than a summer fruit, it's a health ally to munch on!

The star of picnics and barbecues, watermelon is often relegated to the status of a refreshing dessert. Yet this water-packed fruit is a veritable concentrate of benefits for our bodies. Between hydration, antioxidants and cardiovascular support, it fully deserves its place on our summer plates ;)

1. Optimum hydration

Composed of around 90% water, watermelon is ideal for maintaining hydration, especially on hot summer days. As well as quenching thirst, it provides essential electrolytes such as potassium and magnesium, helping to regulate the body's water balance.

2. Support for the heart

Watermelon contains citrulline, an amino acid that helps dilate blood vessels, contributing to better circulation and lower blood pressure. What's more, its high lycopene content, a powerful antioxidant, helps protect the heart by neutralizing the free radicals responsible for cell aging.

3. An antioxidant shield

The lycopene in watermelon doesn't just protect the heart. It also plays a role in preventing certain cancers, particularly those of the digestive system, by reducing oxidative damage at cellular level.

4. A sportsman's ally

Thanks to its citrulline content, watermelon can help reduce post-exercise muscle soreness. One study showed that drinking watermelon juice could reduce the sensation of soreness in athletes.

5. Radiant skin

Rich in vitamins A and C, watermelon contributes to skin health. Vitamin C stimulates the production of collagen, essential for maintaining skin elasticity, while vitamin A helps repair skin cells.

6. Low in calories, high in fibre

With just 30 to 40 kcal per 100 g, watermelon is a light fruit that can be incorporated into a balanced diet. Its fiber content also promotes good digestion and a feeling of satiety.

Drink in moderation

Although watermelon is good for your health, excessive consumption can lead to a high intake of natural sugars. It is therefore recommended not to exceed 100 to 150 grams of watermelon, 2 to 3 times a day!
