These little mushroom tartlets are perfect for a Halloween cocktail party
Are you planning a Halloween party but don’t really feel like spending the afternoon in the kitchen? We get it… Between the drinks, candy, and decorations, we’d love for the appetizers to be simple, quick, and still fit the theme! Good news: these little mushroom tartlets check all the boxes. They only require 3 ingredients, come together in just a few minutes, and best of all, their little faces instantly give your table a Halloween vibe ;)

The recipe? Here it is!

No need to keep you waiting any longer! To make these little bites, all you’ll need is puff pastry, garlic and herb cheese, and button mushrooms.

The recipe makes about a dozen tartlets and takes about 10 minutes to prepare, followed by 18 minutes in the oven. In other words, it’s exactly the kind of idea we like to keep up our sleeve when we’re entertaining guests but don’t want to go through a lot of trouble.

With just 3 ingredients, these savoury mushroom mini-tarts are fun, economical and ultra-quick to prepare. On a puff pastry base, we spread a generous amount of garlic and herb cream cheese and add mushroom slices for a slightly "dark" touch (perfect...

The little detail that makes all the difference: the faces on the mushrooms

Let’s be honest: without their little faces, these would just be really good mushroom tartlets. But with two eyes and a mouth cut out of each mushroom half, they instantly go into Halloween mode!

For the eyes, a simple straw will do. For the mouth, use the tip of a knife or a toothpick. And above all, don’t try to make perfect faces! On the contrary, vary the expressions: some can smile, others can grimace... That’s exactly what makes the platter more fun.

It’s also an easy activity to do with kids, under adult supervision for the cutting, of course.

Crispy on the bottom, melt-in-your-mouth on top...

The basic idea is very simple: take rounds of puff pastry, prick the center of each one, and then place a teaspoon of garlic and herb cheese in the center. Next, arrange the decorated mushrooms on top, then bake everything at 180°C for about 18 minutes.

When they come out of the oven, the pastry is nice and crispy, the cheese is melt-in-your-mouth, and the mushrooms are tender on top. In short, it’s the kind of bite you can easily grab with your fingers during cocktail hour… and the platter usually empties pretty quickly ;)

Want to make them even scarier?

If you want to take this a step further, add a thin layer of tomato sauce under the mushroom. It will add a touch of red that instantly gives your tartlets a “bloody” look.

You can also replace the garlic and herb cheese with fresh goat cheese, plain cream cheese, or another savory spread. A few fresh herbs or a bit of ham can also be added to the filling.

But honestly, with just three ingredients, the original version already works very well. No need to turn your shopping list into a magic potion ingredient list!

What if we want to prepare them in advance?

Are you hosting a dinner party and want to get everything ready ahead of time? Great idea! You can assemble the tartlets in advance and store them in the refrigerator until it’s time to bake them.

It’s best to put them in the oven right before serving the appetizers. That way, you’ll enjoy a beautifully flaky crust and tartlets that are still warm when you set them on the table.

Pair them with a Halloween drink, a few other small bites, and a bowl of candy nearby, and you’ve got a themed appetizer without spending hours in the kitchen. And you have to admit, we’re totally on board with that!
