Butch and Bob Give Back

By Telly Bellies (Visit website)

This entry serves as an explanation as to why we have been unable to write about new food adventures since last week?s entry on Uncle Moe?s.

The Aftermath of Ketsana (photo by: Meetz Sosmena)

While it is so much easier and more entertaining to write about our gastronomic discoveries, we find ourselves compelled to bring attention to recent events in the Philippines. We struggle to find the words to describe the loss of life and property brought about by tropical storm Ketsana (locally known as Ondoy), and the ridiculous level of work that must be done to repair the damage it wreaked.

Donations waiting to be repacked and distributed

Similar calamities have occurred in other places in recent years, like Hurricane Katrina and the tsunami in Thailand in 2004, and while our hearts go out to those who were affected by these, we must admit that empathy and responsibility are magnified when such a calamity occurs right in our own backyard (literally). The feeling of loss and restlessness is indeed exacerbated by the knowledge that we have friends residing in some of Ketsana?s hardest hit areas.

This past week was spent doing our part in reaching out to those affected by the floods ? ransacking the supermarket for goods that could be sent to the stranded families that have run out of supplies; packing rice, bread, noodles, biscuits, canned goods and water; helping the Red Cross prepare care packages to be distributed in the affected areas; and frantically calling the government, search and rescue teams and friends looking for people we know that may have been affected.

It is definitely more convenient to sit back and watch as the Philippines reels in from this weeks? tragedy and as it readies itself for two upcoming typhoons, but it is also more rewarding to take part in helping people rebuild their lives.

We call on everyone (even those abroad!) to do something! Donations of the monetary kind will be a great help, but so will your time! There are a number of Red Cross branches, schools, non-profits and relief centers that are in need of volunteers to prepare relief goods and distribute them to those in affected areas.
