Gilson Korean Restaurant

By hapa bento (Visit website)

Continuing my bimbimbap battle with a visit to Gilson Korean Restaurant!

No vegetarian variety on their menu, but like the others they were happy to omit any meat products, however they didn’t offer a tofu substitute either.

But do you see what I see?

What a shock to find that they serve their dolsot bibimbap with a RAW egg yolk!

Um… this is a new one for me. I’ve had sunny-side-up, over-easy, hard fried, and scrambled egg versions of my favorite dish but this!!! Given my love-hate relationship with eggs I had to make a very quick desicion.

I knew what I had to do. Like a surgeon, a hungry surgeon, I swiftly cut through the veggies and rice so the yolk could fall to the bottom and cook against the super-hot stone bowl.

Fried egg-yolk I can handle…barely.

Other than raw yolk incident the dolsot proved yummy but ordinary, tasty and full of fresh veggies, but there are too many Korean restaurants in the immediate area that have the same. So they’ll have to do better than seven banchan offerings to lure me back. Especially if one of those plates is steamed broccoli.

Saba Man likes the seasoned anchovies though.

It’s a cute little place and convinient too as it’s next door to Babsarang and the Seattle Deli!

With so many Korean and Asian restaurants in the area we can be picky.

And to prove that point Saba Man, being so used to eating kalbi or bulgogi, decided to try their chapchae! He ate it all…a good sign.

They must have delicious food as I’ve seen their parking lot full.  Maybe it’s their barbecue?!

But this battle is all about the bibimbap so Gilson, even with your friendly staff , excellent ventilation (no smoke from the barbcue grills), and piping hot stone bowls, I’m sorry to say that your dolsot bibimbap is not a contender.
