Hakoya Bento Box

Did you receive a bento box as a gift this past holiday?  I got two new boxes, a pink Hakoya and a brown Yamanaka given to me by my mother who currently lives in Hawaii.  She  asks  the “Christmas Wish”  question on Thanksgiving Day every year.  Like clockwork.   This year she gave pause when I requested new bento boxes,  it was a shock that I actually gave her a real answer instead of  the usual “anything”.   Then she questioned, “Don’t you already have a lot of obento bako?”    


“Yes Mom, it’s my addiction”


“Oh… ok, I’ll go look”.   “What kind do you like?”


“I like them ALL  Mom, I like them all”. 



So with that said, today’s featured bento box features my new Hakoya box filled with vegan items.  Also noteworthy is that this is not a Saba Man lunch, it’s for me! 


Fried tofu, simmered kabocha, roasted white asparagus, Field Roast, salted shoyu black beans, garlic mini bok choy, cherry tomato and steamed broccoli!  Everything except the garlic mini bok choy are leftovers.  Those were an impulse purchase because they were so cute.  I was out of both mirin and shoyu so had to stop at the store on the way home.  No bigger than my thumb how could I resist?   They cooked up quickly in a hot skillet with shoyu, mirin and garlic.  If this meal were for Saba Man then I would probably substitute oyster sauce for the shoyu.


This pink box is just beautiful and I want pack it again and again.  So glad my mom is an enabler.
