Review: Lock & Lock 2-Tier Bento Box

The nice folks over at All Things for Sale contacted me a few weeks ago to see if I’d be interested in doing a product review of a new set they just got in from Lock & Lock. Since I own literally hundreds of bento boxes, I wasn’t too sure about it, but I’ve never had a Lock & Lock and I was intrigued that they were actually selling them with chopsticks, a bag, and tiered boxes. I’d always thought they only did food storage containers.

It turns out that I love this thing. It tackles a bunch of things I typically despise about 2-tier bento boxes and also boasts to be 100% leak-proof, dishwasher-safe, and microwave-safe. Read on for what I put inside and details about a giveaway I’ll be hosting for this next week.

In this lunch, I packed leftover “Turkey Bake” with rice and then mango, avocado, and persimmon in the other box.

I’m sure I’ve bitched and moaned about it before, but I cannot stand it when the covers of these two tier boxes are inverted. What I mean by that is, when you put the plastic cover on, it smashes your food down. So if you’re making a charaben, you either have to take that into account and put less food, or just squish your creations. Sometimes you take it into account, but miscalculate and end up smushing your food anyway. RAAAAGE!!

Not so with these, because the covers are domed.

They stack nicely on top of each other and the covers snap on all four sides, making it air-tight. As you can see, the set comes with it’s own chopsticks. Two thumbs up for that.

Sorry for the blazing bright photo, but this is the box opened up with the bag on the side. It’s a cute little thing with a zipper and the two containers fit very snugly and perfectly inside. It’s got a handle for easy carrying.

As you can see, one of the boxes has dividers. While it can sometimes be great to have removable dividers so that you can shift them around, it’s not always good because if your food has any kind of liquid component to it, the juices leak under the bottom and merge tastes. What’s really nice about these dividers is that although they’re permanently fixed, the tops interlock with the lid to make each compartment sealed off from the others once the cover is on. Very nice for not having mango flavored avocado. (though that may not be a bad thing!)

Overall, it was a great size for my lunch and I was very happy with the style and functionality. I have to pack some kind of liquid food like curry or stew to test its leak-proofness and will let you all know how that goes!
