Discover which herbs thrive indoors and which need sunshine
Many people start growing herbs in the kitchen thinking that they will all grow well there, but that's exactly where the mistake lies. Some even resist, but others simply can't survive without direct sunlight and good ventilation, and end up wilting quickly with no apparent explanation.

The truth is that each herb has a different need, and understanding this changes everything about the result. Knowing which ones are best kept in the kitchen and which ones need to be outside can be the detail that guarantees more beautiful, aromatic plants that are always ready to use.

The herbs that go best IN the kitchen

These are more resistant and adapt better to indirect light and an indoor environment:

1. Parsley

One of the easiest to keep indoors.

It likes light, but doesn't need direct sunlight all day.

Where? Perfect for near the sink or window

2. Chives

It grows well in small pots and doesn't require much direct sunlight.

Tip: cut it back often and it will come back stronger

3. Coriander

It adapts well indoors, as long as there is natural light.

Tip: Avoid overwatering (this is where many people go wrong)

4. Mint

Hardy and grows fast - sometimes too fast.

Tip: Best kept in a separate pot (it "invades" everything)

5. Basil (in half shade)

It can stay in the kitchen, as long as it gets a few hours of light.

Tip: Avoid cold drafts. It is sensitive

The herbs that need to stay outside

These suffer indoors and almost always end up dying without enough direct sunlight:

1. Rosemary

It needs a lot of sun and a dry environment.

Tip: In the kitchen, it tends to rot

2. Thyme

Loves full sun and ventilation.

In a closed environment, it loses its aroma and weakens

3. Sage

It needs plenty of light and air circulation.

It gets "sad" indoors.

4. Oregano

The more sun, the more flavor it develops.

Inside the kitchen, it grows weak and odorless

5. Laurel

It needs space, light and time to grow.

Not an indoor plant

The mistake that makes your herbs die quickly

  • The biggest mistake is to treat all herbs as the same.
  • Some like a drier, sunnier climate. Others like humidity and light shade.
  • Mixing everything in the same place (especially in the kitchen) is the quickest way to lose your plants.

Simple (and powerful) bonus tip

If grass:

  • Has tougher leaves → usually prefers sun and outdoor area
  • Has softer leaves → usually adapts better indoors

Caring for herbs doesn't have to be complicated, sometimes just changing the location will do the trick.

And once you get it right, your kitchen changes completely: more flavor, more aroma and less waste.
