Suffering from heartburn? Find out how to relieve the discomfort and avoid triggers!

Heartburn is a burning sensation in the chest, usually caused by the reflux of acidic stomach contents into the esophagus. This discomfort can be influenced by various factors, including eating habits and food choices.

Foods to avoid:

To prevent or minimize the symptoms of heartburn, it is advisable to avoid the following foods:

  • Fatty and fried foods: These foods can slow down gastric emptying, increasing the risk of acid reflux.
  • Spicy foods: Spicy spices can irritate the esophagus and aggravate the burning sensation.
  • Foods with a strong odor: Certain foods with strong odors can trigger or worsen heartburn symptoms.
  • Caffeinated and alcoholic drinks: Coffee, tea, caffeinated soft drinks and alcoholic beverages can relax the lower esophageal sphincter, facilitating reflux.
  • Chocolate: Contains methylxanthines, which can relax the lower esophageal sphincter.
  • Citrus fruits and acidic juices: Fruits such as oranges, lemons and their juices can increase gastric acidity.
  • Tomatoes andtomato products: Highly acidic, they can contribute to reflux.

Additional Recommendations:

In addition to avoiding the foods mentioned, consider the following practices to reduce heartburn:

  • Prefer pasty and dry foods: These foods are less likely to cause acid reflux.
  • Avoid liquids during meals: Consuming large quantities of liquids during meals can distend the stomach and increase the risk of reflux.
  • Eat smaller, more frequent meals: Eating smaller amounts and more frequently can help prevent stomach distension.
  • Avoid lying down immediately after eating: Wait at least two to three hours before lying down after a meal.
  • Raise the headboard: Sleeping with your head elevated can prevent gastric acid from rising into the esophagus during sleep.

By following these guidelines, you can significantly reduce the symptoms of heartburn and improve your quality of life.
