Should you (really) avoid coffee or alcohol in hot weather?

When temperatures rise, we're told time and time again: hydrate! But what about your morning coffee or your aperitif on the terrace? Is it really necessary to banish these drinks when the thermometer exceeds 86°F/30°C? We take stock :)

Coffee and heat: a false alarm?

Coffee is a mild diuretic. In other words, it can slightly increase urine production... but not to the point of causing dehydration if consumed in moderation (1 to 3 cups a day).

More problematic is the fact that it increases body temperature. Hot coffee in an already stuffy room can accentuate that unpleasant "hot flush" sensation. If you tend to sweat easily, it's best to opt for an iced coffee with no added sugar, or alternate with a cold infusion or light tea.

➡️Remember: Coffee is not to be banned, but adapted to your tolerance and hydration needs.

Alcohol and heatwave: a really risky combo

It's often the aperitif that raises the most questions. Chilled rosé wine, beer on the beach or cocktails in the evening... Alcohol, however, is a real enemy of hydration. It acts as a powerful diuretic, disrupts the body's thermal regulation and promotes heatstroke in the event of sun exposure or prolonged exertion.

What's more, in summer, it's often consumed faster, cooler... and more often. This increases the risk of dehydration without even realizing it.

➡️Remember: it's best to avoid alcohol at the hottest times of day, always accompany it with a large glass of water, and don't use it as your main source of coolness. A non-alcoholic aperitif can also be festive (hello, non-alcoholic spritz or homemade lemonade!).

So what do we do?

Alternate drinks: a coffee = a glass of water, an aperitif = a large carafe of water on the table.

Limit consumption outdoors, in direct sunlight.

Choose fresh, low-sugar, less concentrated versions.

Listen to your body: fatigue, headaches, dry mouth... are the first signs of dehydration.

In a nutshell

A little coffee in the morning won't do you any harm, as long as you drink enough water alongside.

Alcohol, on the other hand, requires more caution: it dehydrates, impairs alertness and can worsen the effects of heat...
