Ingredients
For the béchamel sauce :
Materials
- Saucepan
- Air Fryer
Preparation
Make a béchamel sauce by melting the butter, then adding the flour and milk until you reach the desired consistency. Season with salt, pepper and nutmeg.
Spread slices of bread with a tablespoon of béchamel sauce. Top with grated cheese.
Place the slice of ham (here, half a slice was enough) on one of the slices of bread and close with the other slice.
Spread béchamel sauce over the top of the croques monsieur again and cover with grated cheese.
Place the croques monsieur in the Air Fryer and bake for 10 minutes at 370°F/190°C in "Air Fry" mode.
And now it's ready!
Observations
Can we use another cheese for this croque-monsieur?
Of course you can! You can replace the grated cheese with Comté, Cheddar or even a blend of several cheeses for a gourmet touch.
How can I prevent the croque-monsieur from becoming too dry in the Air Fryer?
Make sure you coat the top with béchamel sauce and don't let it cook too long. A cooking time of around 10 minutes is generally sufficient for a soft, golden croque-monsieur.
Can they be baked in the oven?
Yes, place them on a baking tray lined with baking paper and bake at 370°F/190°C for around 15 minutes, until golden brown and au gratin.
How long can I keep croque-monsieur in the fridge?
You can keep uncooked croque-monsieur in the fridge for around 24 hours, wrapped tightly in cling film. Once cooked, they can be kept in the fridge for 1 day, and reheated for a few minutes in the Air Fryer or oven before serving.
Can croque-monsieur be frozen?
Yes, you can freeze croque-monsieur before baking. Wrap them individually in cling film or slip them into a freezer bag. To cook them, simply put them directly into the Air Fryer or oven, without defrosting them first, but with a slightly longer cooking time.
