Whole green moong dal

When you are tired of eating everyday dal, make this whole green moog dal. It is very nutritious and healthy. It goes well with any rice or even with roti or paratha. I used canned tomato sauce with gives nice tangy flavor to the moong dal. So make it and enjoy with your family.


Number of serving: 4
Whole green moong – 1/2 cup

Turmeric powder – 1/4 teaspoon

Bay leaf – 1 small

Water – 1 1/2 cup + 3/4 cup

Ghee or Oil – 3 teaspoons

Cumin seeds – 1 1/2 teaspoons

Tomato sauce – 1/2 cup

Ginger paste – 1 1/2 teaspoons

Garlic paste – 1 1/2 teaspoons

Red chili powder – 1 teaspoon

Garam masala – 1 teaspoon

Salt – to taste

Cilantro – few springs, chopped for garnishing


  • Wash whole green moong under running cold water till the water runs clear. Soak them in warm water for 1 1/2 hours.

    Discard soaked water and add another 1 1/2 cups of water, turmeric powder and bay leaf. Mix well. Close the pressure cooker and put the weight on. Turn on the stove oh high heat. Let it whistle once then lower the heat to medium-low and cook it for another 10 minutes. Then turn off the stove. Let the pressure go down by itself and open the cover.

    Heat the oil or ghee in a pan on medium heat. Once hot add cumin seeds. Let them sizzle. Then add tomato sauce, ginger paste and garlic paste.

    Mix well and cook it till oil or ghee leaves from the sides or sauce thickens.

    Then add garam masala and red chili powder. Mix well and cook for 1 minute.

    Add boiled moong and 3/4 cup of water and salt. Mix well. Let it cook for 5 minutes.

    Sprinkle chopped cilantro and serve hot.

    Plain Rice or Jeera rice or Roti Paratha
