A Home Away From Home...

If you read my last post you would have known that i've been away on a short break the last few days. We went to the Fleurieu Peninsula, which if you haven't been to South Australia is a popular holiday spot for south aussies. We stayed in the small country town Middleton, near Victor Harbor.

We stayed at the Middleton Beach Huts which is a cute little cluster of beach huts just off the main road. It felt like we were staying in a little village. Below is the hut we stayed in called Scarborough, all of the huts were painted different colours, and each is named after a different beach.

Above: The Scarborough beach hut we stayed in.

Above: The inside of the hut was lovely, such sweet decorations around the place. The bathroom was my favourite...a massive shower and a spa which was so nice on the cold evenings.

Above: The gardens around the beach huts were lovely, I love this old telephone box they had in the garden.

Above: This was a really interesting feature, it was outside the bathroom and could be seen from the spa. I thought it was a solid plaster feature, but when i snuck around the back to have a look found that it was actually an old wooden cabinet - as you can see below.

Above: This old tin was one of the decorations in the hut.

Above: Me and Mikey.

Above: There was lots of lovely countryside like this over the road from the beach huts. It looks so pretty now that weve had some rain after such a hot, dry summer.
On one of the days we went to Victor Harbor and walked over to Granite Island, home of the fairy penguins. We didnt see any penguins because they ususally come out at night but we had a nice coffee at the little kiosk over there before we walked back.
Above: This was taken of Victor Harbor over on Granite island.

Above: Mikey when we were walking back to Victor Harbour on the what seems like a never ending bridge.

Above: at the front is Granite island and in the distance Victor Harbour. The sky was so gray i was scared it was going to pour down, luckily we only had some light rain on our way over there.

Above: The long bridge from Victor Harbour to Granite island. It was so grey, but we still had a hint of sunlight.

On one of the days we decided to drive to Cape Jarvis, neither of us had been there so we wanted to see what it had to offer. It took about an hour to get there at speeds i thought were way too fast. The scenery was so pretty, it was worth the drive. So we turned a sudden corner, and there we were looking over the hills to see Kangaroo Island, I was really amazed because I hadn't seen it before and couldnt imagine it would be so close!
Above: where we stopped to eat lunch. You can see Kangaroo Island through the hills, across the sea on the harizon.

Below: I must say i was quite dissapointed in Cape Jarvis, the best thing there was the light house. The main street consisted of a pub...thats it! No country crafty shops or inviting coffee shops :(

We were pretty dissapointed in Cape Jarvis so decided to go on another adventure to another place unknown to us - Strathalbyn! On the way there was a lovely old winery, currency creek I think it was, anyway the building in the photo below is part of the winery. I would love to live somewhere like this!

Strathalbyn was much more inviting, such a cute little country town. Although we couldn't believe they had 3 bakeries (within 500 metres) in such a tiny town! They had a lovely park we walked through with a little river running through it. Although I wouldn't want to live there, it was nice to visit :)

Below: On the way back there were loads of cows. We stopped at one paddock where they were close to the fence and they were just as interested in us as we were in them, as you can see below they were all looking at us, about 20 of them.

I can never go on a holiday without buying something to remind me of the trip. I bought the sweet little bird below for my mum.

Below: There was a lovely shop in Middleton which had hundreds of handmade goodies. I think Mikey even enjoyed browsing through there as much as I did. There was a sweet elderly lady sitting in the corner knitting little woolen mice, and looking after the shop. Anyway, I bought these two handmade things below, one is a little jug and the other is a biscuit press, they are made of clay and are glazed. I also bought my mum some homemade peach jam. I can't wait to make some shortbread and use the biscuit press.

Above: We bought this heart from a shop in Victor Harbour. I don't usually like things as useless as this, but for some reason i really liked it and soon found out there is more behind the red dyed stone. Its called a Kissii stone and is mined in Kenya. Two tribes called Gusii & Abigussi hand carve the stone using knives and other hand made tools, before sanding and polishing them. Then they dye the stone and carve the patterns. Imagine how much work has gone into this one little stone!! It is really heavy too, I thought I could use it for a paper weight for now. The money from the sale also goes back to the area where it was made and helps keep the people employed.

Above: In Port Elliot we visited a little old shop where I bought these lovely vintage materials, cards and ribbons. I could have bought so much more, but had to stop myself, I have too many unfinished projects!
Although I had a lovely relaxing time, and loved spending time with Mikey, I missed my little cat and my own bed, so am happy to be home.
Hope you have enjoyed reading about my little holiday as much as i enjoyed taking it :)
And for all the Twilight fans....Another suprise I had when I got home was the New Moon (sequil to Twilight) trailer/preview has been released. If you haven't seen it you can here!
