Bread Baker?s Apprentice Challenge

By Brown Eyed Baker (Visit website)

A new blogging event has popped up and I stood no chance of staying away. A certified carbaholic (me) + the opportunity to bake bread every week = instant decision-making regarding whether to join the Bread Baker’s Apprentice Challenge. Nicole of Pinch My Salt has gathered together a group of food bloggers and home bakers to tackle Peter Reinhart’s award-winning The Bread Baker’s Apprentice. I have owned this book for a little over a year and have made a few recipes from it (namely, the cinnamon rolls, classic white bread, bagels, and lavash crackers), and loved the idea of having a formal event to push me to try more of the recipes and work my way through even the most difficult of recipes.

The guidlines of the formal event are pretty simple - the group will bake one recipe per week, working through the book in order from the first recipe, and post the results each Monday on our respective blogs. If you’d like to join the formal group, you can contact Nicole through the BBA announcement on her blog here. The deadline to join the group will be this coming Sunday, May 10. The first recipe should be completed by Sunday, May 17th with the associated post going up on Monday, May 18th.

If you like the idea of baking from the book but don’t think that you can commit to doing it every week, I invite you to do it here along with me. I know many of you are interested in bread baking, and this book is a great one to get you started. The first half of the book is dedicated to educating home bakers on the science of bread baking, which arms you with a tremendous amount of information that will not only help you get started, but also continue to build upon your skills. I will post a monthly schedule of the upcoming recipes and anyone that wants to take part is more than welcome. I’ll be putting up a new post each Monday with that week’s completed recipe. Anyone who has completed the same recipe can take part in the discussion by posting in the comments section about your results, linking to your posts or photos, tips you have, anything you’d like to share!

The first month’s posting schedule is as follows:

May 18th - Anadama Bread

May 24th - Greek Celebration Bread

May 31th - Bagels

June 7th - Rich Man’s Brioche
