Kitchen Kids: Homemade Butter
Cooking day with the kids again and this time we did some real down home scratch cooking by making our own butter. I found this great tutorial over at The Magic Onions. This was a great way to show the kids that butter comes from cream. Heck, it was a great way to show me that butter comes from cream. You don't need a butter churn, a cow, or a farm to do this. It was so simple. All you need is a pint of cream, a lidded jar, and a marble.
First, pour the cream into the jar. ![]() Then, add the marble and... SHAKE!!! You can share the SHAKING!!! ![]() You can even do some upside-down SHAKING!!! ![]() When you're tired, hand the SHAKING!!! over to your older sister. ![]() No frowning, Young Lady. You'll like the results, so keep SHAKING!!! ![]() Shake the jar until you can't hear the clanging of the marble against the jar. At this point you have whipped cream. You can stop now or you can continue SHAKING!!! Keep shaking until you can hear the clanging of the marble again. The whipped cream has now separated into buttermilk (which you can drink) and... ![]() BUTTER!!! ![]() Was the shaking worth it? Oh, yes!
