REVIEW: CAPITOL DAWG 1226 20th STREET
![]() Today was indeed a very strange day. I had no intention of going to Capitol Dawg. To make a long story short, I ended up there for lunch. Early this morning I was watching Sacramento's most terrible news show called Good Day Sacramento. It's the 4 hr program on channel 31. Anyways as I was suffering through the program they announced that Iceland on Del Paso Blvd had burned down. Hey man, Iceland is like a major icon in North Sacramento. I had to see what was left of the place. It had been there over 50 years. In the beginning it was owned by the Kerth family. Their grandfather ran a small ice business next door & built the Ice skating rink. It was a part of growing up for many kids in the North Sacramento area. So the plan was to check out Iceland and either eat at the Uptown Cafe on Del Paso Blvd. or drive into downtown & eat at the Capital Casino on 16th street. Well, this didn't work out. After checking out the damage at the Iceland Skating Rink & being too chicken to ask News 10's Suzanne Phan out on a date (she was at the fire scene, doing a news report)I got into my car & headed towards the Uptown Cafe. As I neared the Uptown Cafe, I said to myself "screw this" & kept driving into the downtown area. Upon arrival at the Capital Casino I discovered there was absolutely no place to park. With my game plan shot to hell, I made my way into "The Grid" as the midtowners call it. Finally, I spotted it! It was Capitol Dawg, "Home of the Speedie Weenie". Located at 1226 20th street, Capitol Dawg had a lot to offer. Quite frankly when I walked inside to order a hot dog I was so confused about what I wanted, it made me feel like a complete idiot. Why make something like a hot dog more than what it is? The had 17 Hot dog specialty styles, they had 45 different toppings. They had 6 different kinds of fries & offered more confusion than I had ever experienced when buying something to eat. This was information overload to the max! They had the Capital hot dawg, the double hot dawg, the hot link, the polish, the corn dog, the Italian sausage, the bratwurst & yes even the veggie dog. Hey man, it's Sunday... Can I just get my meal & get the hell out of here? Enough already! After a couple of minutes at the counter feeling like an overwhelmed idiot I decided on the Italian Sausage (meal deal) with mustard & onions. The meal deal included fries & a very large drink. The total with tax was $9.34. That's right, $9.34 for an Italian sausage, fries & drink. So I found a table & sat down. After a couple of minutes I was kicking myself for not asking for sauerkraut. So I soaked the place in, the people, the environment. Actually, it was a pretty clean place. Lot's of midtowners on cruiser bikes, the tattooed people, yuppie wannabees, families & one guy on a Harley. The whole midtown scene was a strange vibe to me. Very trendy, very Sacramento. After about 10 minutes my order arrived. It in fact was pretty good. The fries were not greasy & the Italian sausage was good. Wish I would have asked for sauerkraut. I just had brain overload looking through the choice of 45 toppings. C'mon, who puts Swiss cheese on a hot dog? Would you put teriyaki sauce on one? What about crushed pineapple? Ever put pineapple on a damn hot dog? So in closing I feel bad about the Iceland Skating Rink. But I feel no remorse about my review of Capitol Dawg. I give Capitol Dawg 1 out of 4 stars!
