Melon vs watermelon: which hydrates better?

When the weather's hot and we're melting like a forgotten ice cream in the sun, there are two champions we often find in the cooler: melon and watermelon. Both juicy, both sweet, both refreshing... but when it comes to hydration, which one really comes out on top?
Spoiler: it's a close fight, but we've crunched the numbers for you!
What exactly is hydration?
Hydration isn't just about drinking water. It also means bringing water into the body through food, and some fruits are truly "edible glasses of water".
According to Anses, in summer, around 20-30% of our daily water intake can come from food. Hence the importance of water-rich fruits such as melon and watermelon.
Watermelon: the star of water
Made up of over 90% water (around 91.5% to be precise), watermelon is one of the most hydrating fruits. It's simple: with every bite, you crunch water.
Plus :
- It contains potassium and magnesium, perfect for regulating water balance.
- Very low in sugar (approx. 6 g/100 g)
- It's rich in lycopene, an antioxidant that helps fight oxidative stress.
A study published in Nutrition Today (2013) showed that watermelon could help improve hydration after exercise, almost as much as a light isotonic drink.
Melon: very moisturizing, but a little sweeter
Melons (especially cantaloupe) are also well endowed: around 89% water.
It's a very good moisturizer, slightly denser than watermelon, and above all sweeter (around 8 to 10 g/100 g, depending on variety).
But it doesn't fall short of the mark! It is also :
- Rich in vitamin A (beta-carotene), good for skin and eyes.
- Source of vitamin C
- Contains potassium, good for muscles and electrolyte balance
Its more intense taste may give the illusion that it's "heavier", but this is mainly due to its richness in aromas.
The verdict: winning watermelon
Watermelon is richer in water, less sweet, and more thirst-quenching, especially if you eat a lot of it.
But melon is more nutrient-dense in terms of vitamins... so why choose? Alternating the two is still the best!
