The infallible trick to keep the cookie from softening in the jar

There's nothing more frustrating than opening that jar of crunchy cookies and discovering that they've turned into a pile of shriveled, dull, rubbery flakes. But don't worry: there's a simple, cheap and effective trick for keeping your cookies as dry as fresh out of the oven. And it's literally in your pantry.
The villain of crispiness: moisture
Before the trick, it's important to understand the problem. Cookies are meant to be dry and crunchy - and any exposure to the humidity of the environment or the steam from the ingredients themselves can be fatal to this texture. Even when stored in lidded jars, the air inside already contains enough steam to start softening the cookies over time.
The trick: rice or absorbent paper towels
Option 1: raw rice
Raw rice works like a natural mini-dehumidifier. Put two tablespoons of rice into a sachet made of thin fabric (such as tulle or gauze) or a paper coffee filter, and tie it up with string. Then place this sachet inside the cookie jar (without direct contact with the food, if you prefer). The rice will absorb moisture from the air and keep the cookies crispy for much longer.
Bonus tip: if you use aromatic rice (such as jasmine or basmati), it will leave a pleasant scent in the jar.
Option 2: dry piece of paper towel
Another practical solution: place a folded piece of paper towel in the bottom or top of the cookie jar. It will act as a sponge for the moisture, slowing down the softening process. Change the paper every two or three days for best results.
Other essential care
- Allow to cool completely: If you have baked the cookies, never store them warm. The steam inside will compromise the whole storage process.
- Use really airtight jars: Those loose lids or poorly sealed jars accelerate the problem.
- Avoid opening the jar too often on humid days: every time you open it, new steam gets in.
What if it's already softened? Can you save it?
Yes! You can put the softened cookies in the oven preheated to 350°F/180 °C for 5 to 8 minutes. This helps to remove the moisture. Leave to cool completely out of the oven before storing again - and this time with the rice or paper trick!
