Cherry Cobbler (Trader Joes Morello Cherries)

I came up with this recipe to use those  Morello Cherries you get at Trader Joes but any canned cherries in light syrup/juice-- not heavy syrup-- will work fine. I used my tried and true cobbler recipe making a few tweaks to it.
1 jar Trader Joes Morello Cherries or any canned cherries in juice drained
~OR~ use 2 cups fresh pitted cherries
1/4 cup sugar
1 cup all purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
11/2 teaspoon baking powder
3 Tb butter
3/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons cornstarch
1/2 cup sugar
plus: 1 cup of water brought to a boil

Preheat oven to 350 
Filling: Butter an 8x8 square pan and add drained cherries, sprinkle the 1/4 cup sugar over top. 
Crust : Mix the butter and and 3/4 cup sugar until mixed, add milk and mix, add flour, baking powder, and salt & mix for 1 minute, well combined. Plop and spread over cherries, there may be uncovered spaces and that's fine.
Topping: Sprinkle on corn starch and 1/2 cup sugar. Pour boiling water all over. Bake for 1 hour or until golden brown.
Serving Suggestions: I served this still slightly warm cobbler over cold whipped cream!

The recipe directions say to "add milk and mix" but the ingredients list doesn't include milk.
