Culinary Icon: KitchenAid® Stand Mixer

By Mel Mel Cooking (Visit website)

KitchenAid stand mixers bring me back to my high school days. As a student at a vocational high school my career area of choice was culinary arts where there were a number of these commercial grade mechanical workhorses in our class kitchen. I can remember intensely scrubbing them down at the end of the school year when it was time to close up shop for the summer. I've always wanted one of my own, but in my 10 years since high school graduation I have yet to attain one.

KitchenAid is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year. The legendary stand mixer was introduced in 1919 and has been going strong ever since. The name was born when wives of the company executives were asked to help name the stand mixer and one replied, "I don?t care what you call it, I know it?s the best kitchen aid I?ve ever had."

"In addition to being the product that started it all for KitchenAid, the stand mixer remains the standard for everything we create," notes Debbie O?Connor, senior manager of brand experience for KitchenAid. "We?ve never lost sight of the brand?s original guiding principle that everything carrying the KitchenAid name should make time spent in the kitchen more enjoyable."

As part of the 90th anniversary celebration, KitchenAid has come out with a special edition Artisan® Series stand mixer in Candy Apple Red complete with a 5-quart clear glass bowl in place of the usual stainless steel (as a tribute to earlier models) and a 90th anniversary insignia on the mixer?s trim band. It will be available this summer at a suggested retail price of $399.

I most likely won't be getting one this time around, but I know one day it'll happen. By that time I'm sure there will be some other cool color or new attachment that the people at KitchenAid will come up with. Until then I'll keep using good ol' fashioned arm strength and my hand mixer. My scrawny arms can use the workout anyway.
