Favorite Tools & Tips in the Kitchen
I thought today I would share with you a couple of my favorite tools & tips in the kitchen. Some you may have already heard of, but others might surprise you.
First is Silpat. Straight from France these heavy silicone coated sheets provide an even transfer of heat, they can be used in any type of oven, and assure easy release without any greasing. Designed to withstand temperatures from -40 degrees F to 480 degrees F. Meets FDA and NSF standards. I can not say enough about these. They can be pricey, but I have tried other brands, and these are truly superior. Find it here. Here is a great little tip, when your in a pinch. Need buttermilk. Instead of rushing out to buy it, add 1 T. lemon juice to one cup of whole milk and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Presto, a perfect buttermilk substitute. When in doubt about an egg, make this test: add 2 tsps. salt to a cup of water and put the egg in it. A fresh egg will sink, a doubtful egg will float.A clothespin, (yes you heard me right), can be one of the handiest tools in the kitchen. Great for holding your place in that cookbook. It is also great as a clip for closing bags of chips and other items, but also great for keeping your spoon from slipping & drowning in your sauce. Having trouble with those unwanted guest in your kitchen. Sprinkle shelves, window sills, and door sills with a mixture of red pepper and sage to get rid of ants. Have a great weekend!
