Food Cart Culture

By Eat, Drink and Be Aware (Visit website)

Good Morning and Happy Saturday!

I am the only one up and I am enjoying a good cup of French Press Coffee and blogging on my new laptop!  Yep, I got my own new Dell Laptop and it is not only fun but Lotus Pink in color to boot.  The shopping has continued and it really needs to stop.  Steve needed to buy a new laptop for law school and I think in an effort to have to stop sharing his with me he got me my own laptop and I love it.  Now the whole family has their own computer and it really is nice not to have to fight with Emmet or Steve over using the computer.  We have mostly been an Apple family but PC's are so much cheaper and we have had a couple hard drive failures on our Apple's and that is a real drag!  I am absolutely loving my new laptop and freedom.

So my love affair with Portland has continued this week and we went and checked out the Food Cart Culture here.  Portland has a huge Food Cart scene and they are located all around the city.  We decided to check out the 12th and Hawthorne Food Cart area and be pre-warned that the pictures that you are about to see are not the healthiest!

Since it was our first visit we had to try lots of things, the carts at this location included:

Potato Champion--Belgian Fries and Poutine
Whiffied Fried Pies- Handmade Savory and Sweet Pies
Bubba Bernies-Cajun Food
Pyro Pizza-Wood Fired Pizza
El Brasero- Mexican Tacos and Burritos
Perierra Creperie- French Crepes

I ordered the Farmer's Market Pizza at Pyro Pizza.  It was made with fresh pesto, summer squash, garlic, carmelized onions and romano cheese.

The pesto was fresh indeed and the crust was perfectly crunchy and chewy.  I had two slices of this pizza and it was a good thing I had taken Gumbo for an 8 mile run that morning because I needed to check out the crepes for dessert!

Zoe orderd a Ham and Egg Crepe and loved it.  They had lots of interesting savory crepes and definitely want to come back and try some out.

Steve and Emmet went for some of the fried stuff and luckily fried food makes me sick so I was not tempted by it.

Emmet checked out Bubba Bernies and ordered a Fried Catfish PoBoy.

He said it was pretty good.  He loves getting Po-Boys in New Orleans so he has a base upon which to build on and living up to true New Orleans Po-Boys is tough.  He said that the bread in New Orleans is better but that it was a good catfish po-boy.

Steve went for the gusto and ordered Poutine from the Potato Champion.

Potato Champion is Portland, Oregon's only late night fry cart! We are located at the corner of SE 12th and Hawthorne Blvd. in the parking lot next to Tiny's Coffee.

Our fries are prepared in the authentic Belgian style, meaning that after they are peeled, cut, and washed, they are first blanched at a low temperature in the fryer. This cooks the potato without crisping it and brings out the potatoes natural fragrance. The fries are then left to sweat out the oil and are fried to order at a much higher temperature to crisp the outside of the fry while the inside remains soft and fluffy. We are also serving Poutine! The classic Canadian comfort food consisting of fries covered in cheese curds and gravy. Our gravy is made from a free range chicken stock and the curds are provided by the award winning Rogue Creamery in Central Point, OR

He also ordered a serving of Belgian Fries for the table.

Emmet and Zoe said the fries were "awesome" and Steve said the Poutine was crazy good.  He also said he would not be eating for a couple of days after our journey to Food Cart land.

Now even though I can't do fried food, I do have a terrible sweet tooth and am always up for dessert.  That is my vice and I may some time work on that aspect of my diet but for now am going to enjoy my daily sweets!

Emmet and I ordered crepes for dessert at Perierra Creperie.  He ordered the S'more Crepe and I got the special Blackberry, Blueberry, Chevre + Honey crepe.  Oh my.... what a treat!

Fresh Blackberries, a blueberry compote and tangy cheve cheese made this crepe "freaking" amazing.  I am going to try to expand my descriptive language a bit in the future but for now that is how I am going to describe the crepe.  Yum!

I think the crepe station was my favorite and I can't wait to go back and try some more.

S'more Crepe being made.

Emmet's Crepe came off the griddle steaming hot and filled with ooey, gooey marshmallows, melted chocolate and crunchy graham crackers.  I had to have a bite and it was simply delightful.

The foodie culture here is amazing and there is so many places that we can't wait to try.  Each neighborhood seems to have its own block of restaurants and I feel lucky to be living here.   Obviously, I will be blogging again about the Food Carts so stay tuned.

There is so much going on here this weekend we are not sure what to do.  We are going to walk over to the Hollywood Farmer's Market and pick up some goodies and then may go to the Saturday Arts and Crafts Market and are definitely going to be attending the free symphony concert in Laurelhurst Park this evening.

Life is good here in Portland and I can't wait to share this city with you.  I have not been cooking or baking alot yet but I am sure I will get there so please be patient.  There is just so much good food to try.

I am off to grab my bags and head out to the Farmer's Market.  Have a great Saturday.
