FOOD STORAGE FANTASTIC!
Hello and welcome to a post devoted to
FOOD STORAGE! If you are new to my blog, check out this link Food Storage Fantastic to see some of the great food storage recipes I have posted thus far. When I was a new mother (some 12 odd years ago) I saw a television commercial that really opened up my eyes. In the commercial a gal in her 20's is seen waiting tables at a cafe. When her shift is over she stuffs her coat pockets full of those little disposable packages of ketchup. In the next scene, she is opening up the packages and putting them into a sauce pan with water in it. She then sits her 4 children down for dinner, and serves them this water/ketchup mixture. One of her little boys is saying "I don't like it Mommy, I don't want to eat it." "Please." she says "Just have a few bites." That commercial haunts me. Not having enough food to feed my hungry children.....I really can't even imagine the kind of stress and worry that would inflict. After I saw that commercial I told myself I best get prepared. I best learn what ever needed to be learned, develop what ever skill needed developing, and stock up on whatever kind of thing needed stocking. All in an effort to avoid hunger. So far, my family has indeed been blessed to not have to go without. (In fact most days we are trying to figure out how a way to keep our hips from expanding) However, we never know what the future may bring. Thus, food storage is a necessity at this house. My mother in-law gave me some great advice once when we were discussing food storage. "You can keep a lot of people full, for quite a while with some basic ingredients." And they are (drum roll please) FlourWheatSugar: granulated, brown, powdered SaltYeastBaking SodaBaking PowderOilNow, this list may seem a bit bland and uninteresting for your tastes....but these treasures can go along way (especially if you have some great ingredients to go along with them) to filling up a family for not much money at all. I try to keep a 6-12 month supply (3 year supply on wheat...it lasts for a LONG time) of all of these. Other things that are a must around here are as follows: Peanut ButterRiceDried Beans: white, black, pinto, re fried, split peas...(don't turn up your nose, these things can be made to taste FABULOUS!....to be honest I'm still working on fabulous split peas. I'll let you know when I have perfected them into something wonderful.)OatmealCanned TomatoesSeasonings: bullion cubes, pepper, oregano, soy sauce, cumin, Johnny's Garlic Seasoning (I'm addicted), cinnamon, cocoa, PASTA: all different shapes Tuna Now, these are the main ingredients I keep because this is what we USE and LIKE EATING at this house. As you know I LOVE EATING and cooking fabulous food. I am always on the lookout for recipes that use the staples in my food storage....and when I say use it, I mean use it to make something FANTASTIC! Hopefully you find some here that your family will love as well. I would love to hear about some of your favorite "Food Storage" recipes. Leave a comment, or you can email me at jamiecooks@live.com. Happy Storing! More great recipes to come in the next little bit. I am planning on posting a lot of great side dishes for Thanksgiving, some more great pies and a super way to make your own cranberry sauce. Have a great day! related searches : Food
